AFTERMATH: 3 Stars, Teddy Bear Edition!
By Staci C. – Silvertips Staff Writer
The Everett Silvertips have won five games in a row and 11 in their last 15 games, 3-0 over the Saskatoon Blades on an incredible night for hockey and community in Snohomish County.
A look at the three stars:
1) Montana Onyebuchi: He had a game that he will certainly never forget. At 6:53 he fired a laser beam past Nolan Maier and got to celebrate with his teammates as the 5,612 fans at XFinity had bears rain from the stands.
“It was a huge boost, it gave me so much confidence; I got an assist after,” Onyebuchi said.
Onyebuchi is known for throwing down the gloves for the Tips and was asked why he didn’t get the Gordie Howe Hat Trick (goal, assist, fight) this evening:
“I was asking everyone [to fight] but they wouldn’t. They wouldn’t give it to me.”
2) Carter Hart: Another day, another star performance by the top goaltender in the Western Hockey League. Hart made 30 saves to give his team their 5th win in a row and Carter now has 23 shutouts in his career.
“He has such a calm mindset,” said Tips head coach Dennis Williams. “He reads the puck well, sees the puck well and he plays the puck so well that it’s like having another defenseman on the ice.”
3) Patrick Bajkov: A quietly awesome night for “Patty” with 3 points, as he got 1 goal and 2 assists for the Silvertips. He, of course, was part of the beauty set-up to the teddy bear toss goal and also got a quick pass off to Fonteyne for the insurance goal.
Bajkov’s goal – with wheels in full motion as he entered the zone – generated some traffic in front of the net and the puck slowly rolled past Maier to make it 3-0.
Williams commented how that goal is a prime example as to why you throw everything you can at the net; typically, most goaltenders have that shot but at the off chance they don’t, you get yourself some good ol’ fashioned puck luck.
Bajkov now has 41 points through 29 games – to say he is having a good season?
It’s an understatement.
