GAME RECAP / Peaks and Valleys
EVERETT, Wash. – Dylan Ferguson delivered a 37 save effort and Lane Bauer scored twice, to help the Kamloops Blazers skate past the Everett Silvertips, 5-1 on Sunday before 4,089 fans at XFINITY Arena in WHL action.
Ending three games in three days and still with Noah Juulsen, Lucas Skrumeda and Riley Sutter on the sidelines, the Silvertips took their first regulation against Kamloops for the first time since the 2012-13 season, ending a streak of 14 straight games with a point (12-0-2) in the series).
Ferguson made a flailing glove save on Patrick Bajkov in the opening minutes as the Silvertips threatened early, which included 16 shots in the first period. But Deven Sideroff’s 28th goal of the season fooled Mario Petit from between the circles, and the Tips trailed by one at the first period’s horn.
Connor Dewar seemed to manufacture a swift turnaround with his 10th goal of the season just 11 seconds into the second period, banking the puck off Ferguson after he drove the left wing. But on the next shift, Lane Bauer roofed his 28th goal of the season off the rush just 14 seconds after Dewar’s tally and Nick Chyzowski hammered a rebound from the left circle at 3:54, chasing Petit for Carter Hart after the Silvertips fell behind, 3-1.
Montana Onyebuchi then laid a vicious but clean hit in the right corner of the Silvertips zone, and Luc Smith charged the Silvertips defensemen resulting in a scrap at 4:19, ending after a series of right blows by Onyebuchi. Erik Miller was also issued an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the process, putting the Silvertips on the power play.
But characteristic of a Sunday gone awry, Lane Bauer and Collin Shirley capitalized off a turnover between the Silvertips point men and Bauer parked a wrister from the left circle at 4:52 for a 4-1 game.
The Silvertips pulled Hart with less than nine minutes to play in regulation, looking for a late spark but a clearing attempt by Kamloops found Quinn Benjafield at center ice for an empty netter with 8:23 left, closing the score.
Petit stopped 14 shots to take the loss, while Hart made six saves.
