EVERETT – Former Everett Silvertips overage defenseman and team captain Matt Pufahl has signed an Amateur Tryout (ATO) agreement with the AHL’s Lake Erie Monsters, top minor-league affiliate of the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, the club announced today. Pufahl becomes the fourth Silvertip to catch on in the American Hockey League since the end of Everett’s season.
Pufahl, 20, completed his junior career with the Silvertips this season after spending the previous three years with the Saskatoon Blades and Red Deer Rebels. The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native smashed his previous career highs with 15 goals and 35 assists to reach 50 points in 62 appearances, placing him third on the club and 15th among all WHL defensemen in scoring. Along with a +6 rating and 54 penalty minutes, his 33 powerplay points (8g/25a) were tied for most on the team and fourth-most among the league’s defenders.
Pufahl was named captain of the 2013-14 Silvertips on October 17, an honor which happened to come just days after he had earned the first WHL Player of the Week award of his career. He recorded his 100th WHL point on February 26 and reached 200 career games played on March 4 before cracking the 50-point plateau for the first time in his final regular season game at Portland on March 16.
The Monsters have now signed a Silvertips player to an ATO in each of the last three seasons, bringing in Reid Petryk last year and Ryan Harrison in 2012. Lake Erie opens a four-game homestand with back-to-back games against the Utica Comets on Thursday and Friday.
