RECAP: 8’ers Gonna 8

EVERETT, Wash.  A total of 13 players hit the scoresheet and the Everett Silvertips used a season high eight goals to crush the Portland Winterhawks in an 8-3 victory before 3,817 fans in downtown Everett on Sunday in WHL action, lifting the Silvertips into first place in the U.S. Division.

The Tips, who began Oct. 27 in last place, have won 17 of the last 22 games and ripped five unanswered goals in the second period. Bryce Kindopp, who had first star honors, had a two goal effort.

The first period started off shaky as Portland got the first goal at 1:09 as the puck went five hole past Dustin Wolf, making the score 1-0 Winterhawks on Skyler McKenzie’s goal. Everett got the equalizer at 9:53 as a big blast from Onyebuchi rebounded off of Shane Farkas onto Bryce Kindopp who wristed into Portland’s net, making it 1-1.

At 16:52, Luke Ormsby got his first goal as a Silvertip thanks to a set up by Akash Bains and Reece Vitelli, beating the Winterhawks defense down the left wing and making it 2-1 Tips. On the very next shift, Portland tied it up at 17:26 as McKenzie got his second of the night and the period ended in a 2-2 tie.

There was an offensive explosion by the Silvertips in the second period as Everett scored 5 unanswered goals. At 5:20, Kindopp got his second of the night thanks to a great set-up by Jake Christiansen and Riley Sutter to make it 3-2. Martin Fasko-Rudas got his first WHL goal and first as a Silvertip at the 8:40 mark thanks to a monster pass by Montana Onyebuchi to make it 4-2; Fasko-Rudas’ goal ended up being the game winner.

The scoring did not stop there as 35 seconds later, Akash Bains got his second goal of the season and second point in the game to make it 5-2; Reece Vitelli and Luke Ormsby were credited with the assists and their second points of the game. At this point, Shane Farkas, Portland netminder, was relieved by Cole Kehler.

Patrick Bajkov got his 20th goal of the season at 13:03 with helpers from Connor Dewar and Kyle Walker to make it 6-2. Riley Sutter got the 7th tally of the evening, a one-timer at the left circle, for the Silvertips with a goal at 16:52 and the period ended 7-2 Silvertips.

Portland got their third of the game 4:51 into the third period by Jake Gricius to make it 7-3 but on the very next shift, Everett answered back as Brandson Hein had a great breakaway goal thanks to a nice set-up by Fasko-Rudas to make the final score 8-3.

Portland had no power play opportunities. Shane Farkas made 19 saves for Portland before being relieved by Cole Kehler, who made 12 saves.

The Silvertips will return from the holiday break on Wednesday, December 27 at Vancouver at 7:00 PM PT (Fox Sports 1380 / WHL Live).
