RECAP: Back to the drawing board
EVERETT, Wash. Tyler Benson’s second period goal stood as the eventual winner and David Tendeck recorded 34 saves to help the Vancouver Giants hold off the Everett Silvertips, 2-1 before a crowd of 5,525 in downtown Everett on Friday night in WHL action.
Matt Fonteyne’s 18th goal was the only Silvertips goal of the night, 51 seconds into the second period. Dustin Wolf made 23 stops in net for the Tips.
The Tips dominated the first half of the first period as they controlled the play the majority of the time and did not allow a Vancouver shot for the first 12 minutes of the game. Owen Hardy and Kyle Walker dropped the gloves at 14:42, which energized the crowd in a first period scrap.
The second period was kicked off by a beauty 2-on-1 play as Bajkov got a beautiful feed to Fonteyne to make the score 1-0 Tips at the 51 second mark. Vancouver managed to tie it up at 6:43 with a goal by Dawson Holt, on a snap shot from the inside the left circle. Minutes later, an unfortunate turnover behind the Everett net ended with a slow roller, five hole by Benson, past Dustin Wolf to make it 2-1 Giants at 13:19.
The Tips got their feet again in the third and had plenty of chances, but David had a huge bounce back game and was essentially a brick wall as he made 34 saves total. Wolf was pulled with less than two minutes to go and despite plenty of opportunities, were not able to push the game into overtime. Both teams came up empty on their power plays.
