RECAP: Bean Counter
KENNEWICK, Wash. – Jake Bean scored a goal and added an assist, while Morgan Geekie spearheaded a three-goal rally to get the Tri-City Americans past the Everett Silvertips, 4-2 before 2,799 fans at Toyota Center on Tuesday night.
The Silvertips needed only two power play chances for two power play goals, scored back to back in the second period for their only lead of the night. Matt Fonteyne and Garrett Pilon each earned a goal, while Patrick Bajkov’s assist set a new Silvertips single season record with 94 points.
UP NEXT: The Silvertips, whose magic number remains at three points to clinch the U.S. Division, return home for Fan Appreciation Night before an expected large crowd downtown Everett’s Angel of the Winds Arena against the Victoria Royals at 7:35 p.m. (1380 AM / FM 95.3 / WHL Live / Tips App). The series launches a home-and-home series where the Silvertips attempt to seize their sixth U.S. Division title in franchise history.
The Silvertips controlled play for a majority of the first period with a 6-2 shots advantage and were flying in the opening minutes, nearly taking an early lead on a pair of chances at the top of the crease. But Bean’s 11th goal of the season put Tri-City up 1-0 with 1:37 left in the period on a sharp angled shot from the bottom of the left circle.
The pair of power play goals lifted the Tips to a 2-1 lead early in the second period, starting with a Matt Fonteyne snap shot from the right circle for his 34th goal at 2:52. Garrett Pilon then dug out a rebound from Bajkov’s attempt between the circles and parked a backhander at 9:03 for a 2-1 edge on Bajkov’s single season record point.
However, Michael Rasmussen led the Tri-City rally at 10:45 with a deflection at the net from Bean’s point shot to tie the game, and Morgan Geekie finished a give-and-go with Juuso Valimaki at the left circle for a 3-2 lead with 4:50 left in the period.
The Tips outshot Tri-City 35-24 for the game and earned a 10-7 advantage in shots for the third period, also buoyed by a pair of highlight reel saves by Carter Hart – including a diving glove stop on Geekie. But the Tips came barely short after Bryce Kindopp hit a post from the left circle and Gianni Fairbrother’s left point shot leaked through Patrick Dea, but skipped wide of the net.
Morgan Geekie wrapped up the game on an empty netter with 1:14 to play.
