EVERETT, Wash. – Vladimir Bobylev’s goal with 4:59 to play in regulation broke a tie game and the Victoria Royals escaped the Everett Silvertips, 4-3 in Game 2 of the first round of the WHL Playoffs, tying the series before 4,196 fans at XFINITY Arena in downtown Everett.
The Tips got a multi point game each from Dominic Zwerger and Patrick Bajkov, while the Silvertips buried two power play goals. Victoria broke an eight game winless skid dating back to regular season play and cashed in two power play goals as well.
The first period started off very even, seeing a lot of end-to-end action from both teams. At 7:23, Spencer Gerth took a slashing penalty, giving the Tips their first power play of the evening.
During the power play, Zwerger set up Bajkov with a nice pass and Bajkov shot it at Outhouse, who then cleared it to Fonteyne and roofed it over Outhouse, making it 1-0 Tips at 7:53. At 12:03, Zwerger took a slashing penalty, giving the Royals their first power play of the game. Matthew Phillips scored at 12:45 with assists from Hannoun and Reddekopp, tying the game at 1-1.
The second period began with Everett on the power play and Bajkov scored a beautiful goal – a snap shot from the right circle – with assists from Zwerger and Davis at 0:49, making it 2-1. The lead did not last long as Tyler Soy tied up the game less than one minute later, making it 2-2. Everett’s play was a tad flat through the second and was chasing Victoria’s speedy guys.
At 5:54, Matt Fonteyne took a slashing penalty in the offensive zone, giving Victoria another power play. Towards the tail end of the kill, Tyler Soy got his second goal of the evening off a weird angle, giving the Royals their first lead of the series at 3-2. Shortly after, Noah Juulsen cleared the puck over the glass, and got a delay of game penalty at 10:17. Thankfully, the penalty kill seemed to be clicking and were able to keep the Royals from expanding their lead. 4 seconds after the penalty expired, Regan Nagy boarded Dominic Zwerger, leading to a scary scene of Zwerger laying on the ice. He was slow to get up but skated under his own power and left the game briefly.
Nagy received a boarding penalty and the Tips were on the power play for two minutes. The Tips couldn’t get much set-up on the power play and were unable to capitalize. Zwerger returned to the bench and ice after the penalty expired, which was great to see. Shots were Victoria with 13 and Everett with 8.The Tips began the third with more pressure on the Victoria Royals than what we saw in the second period. Brandson Hein scored a huge goal at 7:49 to tie the game at 3-3; a lot of credit can go to Lucas Skrumeda who went in all alone and fed Hein with a great pass.
The Royals came right back into the game by continuous pressure and offensive zone time. The Tips struggled to clear the puck from their zone on several occasions during the third.
Vladimir Bobylev scored the game winning goal off of a faceoff in the Tips’ zone, making the score 4-3 at 15:01. The Tips pulled Carter Hart with 1:23 left but was unable to set up the play and unable to tie the game up late.
Carter Hart’s counterpart, Griffen Outhouse, made 21 saves.
The Silvertips will battle the Royals again for game three at Victoria on Tuesday, March 28 at 7:05 PM PT (Fox Sports 1380 / WHL Live).
