KELOWNA, British Columbia – Kevin Davis scored a goal and added two assists while Carter Hart turned in 26 saves to help steer the Everett Silvertips to a 4-1 victory over the Kelowna Rockets before 5,073 fans at Prospera Place on Wednesday, in WHL action.
The Silvertips never trailed and netted the game’s first goal, while Aaron Irving blasted the game winner to spell Dominic Zwerger’s two goal night. The Silvertips improved to 6-0-3 in the last 9 games against Kelowna. Additionally, the win allowed them to keep pace behind the Seattle Thunderbirds, one point behind the U.S. Division lead with three games to play. The Silvertips have one game in hand.
At the 5:30 mark, Kevin Davis was set up on a point-to-point feed and seared a blast from the right side for a 1-0 lead. Dillon Dube answered on the next shift, 11 seconds later on a wrister from the left circle, but Irving restored the cushion at 2-1 on a blast from the right point for his 18th goal of the season, tying the Tips for third in the club.
Zwerger’s first of two goals built the lead to 3-1 at 8:38 of the second period, after Matt Fonteyne (who missed the previous shift with an equipment issue on the bench) returned to win a face-off at the right circle. Davis took the face-off win, steered the puck to Zwerger, and then Zwerger cruised into the slot to beat Herringer with a snap shot over the shoulder.
The Silvertips, allowing only five shots in the third period, kept their lead in tact while Hart turned away Nick Merkley on a diving save from the base of the right circle. Zwerger sealed the game on an empty netter with 1:06 left, set up by Devon Skoleski.
Michael Herringer made 25 saves in the loss.
