RECAP / Great Unexpectations
LANGLEY, B.C. – Ty Ronning’s goal just 31 seconds into overtime forced the Everett Silvertips to settle for a standings point in a 5-4 overtime defeat to the Vancouver Giants before 4,317 fans at Langley Events Centre on Tuesday night.
The Silvertips moved their recent run to 9-1-2 in the last 12 games and have earned points in five of the last six trips to visit the Giants. Dominic Zwerger earned second star honors with a two goal effort.
Eetu Tuulola beat Ryan Kubic with a snap shot from the right circle just 4:09 into the game for a 1-0 Silvertips lead, but Vancouver responded with three goals in a span of 2:11 to seize a 3-1 advantage. Alec Baer’s deflection at the left post tied the game at 10:16, then 14 seconds Brendan Semchuk slammed a re-direction home from the right circle for a 2-1 lead.
Owen Hardy buried a rebound off Baer’s wrister from the right circle at 12:27, and the Silvertips were forced to rally from a two goal deficit through 20 minutes. Their march began on Dominic Zwerger’s wrister off the rush from the left circle just 41 seconds into the second period, and Zwerger teed up a slapshot at 11:45, after Riley Sutter’s face-off win on a five-on-three situation, and the game was tied.
Just 1:59 later, Brett Kemp seized a Vancouver turnover in the Giants zone and fed Connor Dewar at the net, whose fifth goal of the season off a one-timer put the Tips ahead again, 4-3. James Malm tied the game through with 2:52 left in the second period on a sharp-angled bid, capping a wild second period.
Besides the four goals, the Silvertips killed a 5-on-3 Giants opportunity, circling head coach Kevin Constantine’s ejection from the game after Zwerger was issued an embellishment penalty at 6:49.
The Silvertips outshot Vancouver, 11-4 in the third period but the Giants’ lone shot of OT found the back of the net, after Matt Barberis’ 60-footer deflected off Ronning’s stick.
Mario Petit, bidding for his fourth straight win, earned 21 saves for the Tips.
The Silvertips return home tomorrow, hosting Vancouver at XFINITY Arena, starting at 7:05pm PT (Fox Sports 1380 / 95.3 FM / Tips App / WHL Live).
