SPOKANE, Wash. – Connor Dewar’s natural hat trick was shaded by Hudson Elynuik’s game winning goal with 3.5 seconds left in regulation, and the Spokane Chiefs snuck past the Everett Silvertips, 5-4 in WHL action on Wednesday night before 2,902 fans at Spokane Arena.

Dewar originally rescued the Tips out of a 2-0 deficit and notched the first hat trick of his career and 48th all-time in Silvertips history. Riley Sutter, one day after reaching the NHL Central Scouting System’s “Players to Watch” list, posted his fourth goal in five games. Dorrin Luding, making his second consecutive start, took the loss on 29 saves.

Ethan McIndoe’s tip at the net, 2:32 in and Jeff Faith’s dangle move at 3:59 of the first period put Spokane up 2-0 but the Tips recovered on back to back power goals in the second period. Dewar drilled a rebound past Dawson Weatherill at 4:02 and jammed in another one at the right post with 50 seconds left in the second period, and the Tips emerged after 40 minutes with a 2-2 tie and 22-21 edge in shots.

Dewar, coming off the bench for a change, took Sean Richards’ cross-ice pass and rifled a shot from the left circle past Weatherill for the hat trick goal, just 54 seconds into the third period for the Tips first lead at 3-2. But the game took a vicious turn when Spokane buried back to back goals in a span of 1:06 to claim a 4-3 lead.

Taylor Ross finished a pass from behind the net at 2:53, then Tyson Helge Sen converted Jared Anderson-Dolan’s drop feed from off the rush at 3:59. But the Tips responded at 5:23 when Riley Sutter parked a pass from between the circles for a 4-4 tie.

In the final 20 seconds of regulation, the Tips were caught in their own zone but stable at even strength, until Patrick Bajkov took a deflected puck near the face. With Bajkov struggling to recover and the Tips unable to gain possession, Hudson Elyniuk walked out to the high slot and snuck a low shot along the ice past Luding with 3.5 seconds left for the game winner.

Weatherill made 24 saves in net for Spokane.

The Silvertips continue the nine-game road trip Friday at Scotiabank Saddledome, visiting the Calgary Hitmen at 6:00pm PT (1520 AM KKXA / WHL Live / Tips App). The Tips return home Wednesday, Oct. 18 vs. Tri-City at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available at www.everettsilvertips.com/tickets.
