RECAP » “Can Do” in Kent
KENT, Wash. – Connor Dewar dished a pair of assists and the Everett Silvertips went wire-to-wire, cruising to a 5-1 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds in the pre-season finale on Saturday at ShoWare Center.
Finishing the pre-season at 5-2-0-0 (10 points), the Silvertips gradually pulled away after a potentially game-changing major penalty to Matt Fonteyne paved the way for Orrin Centazzo’s game winning shorthanded goal. Dorrin Luding, splitting duty in net with Danton Belluk, stopped all 16 shots he saw in the starting role while Belluk six of seven shots.
Up next for the Silvertips is Opening Night, Sept. 23 at XFINITY Arena against the Portland Winterhawks at 7:05 p.m. Housing Hope presents a special Fill the House campaign, and the first 3,000 fans will receive a collectible Silvertips magnet schedule, presented by Lamoureux Real Estate. Tickets are on sale at www.everettsilvertips.com/openingweekend.
Montana Onyebuchi ripped his first pre-season goal through traffic from the right point for a 1-0 Tips lead with 1:36 to go in the first period, and the Silvertips threatened to tack on when Sean Richards executed a backhanded goal in the second period, but was washed out when Matt Fonteyne was issued a five minute major for slew footing and a game misconduct.
Instead of succumbing to momentum, the Silvertips built on theirs with Centazzo’s goal for a 2-0 lead. He successfully pursued a clearing attempt by Jake Christiansen off the right boards, streaked to the net and buried a sharp backhander past goaltender Cole Schwebius from the right circle.
Brandson Hein buried a power play goal from the left circle for a 3-0 Tips lead with 4:10 to play, and Dawson Butt entertained several friends and family from Buckley with a power play backhander from the left circle, 5:02 into the third for a 4-0 cushion.
Newcomer Riley Bruce, off a cross-ice feed from Dewar, snapped his second goal of the pre-season from the left circle, off the rush at 13:23, and the Silvertips rout elevated to a 5-0 cushion. With the game essentially academic, Reece Harsch spoiled the Tips shutout bid with a left point shot that snuck through traffic at 16:56.
Schwebius took the loss with 24 stops.
NOTES: The Silvertips scratched Patrick Bajkov, Kyle Walker, Gianni Fairbrother, Ethan Browne, Dustin Wolf, and Carter Hart … Bajkov (Vegas) and Hart (Philadelphia) are still with their respective NHL teams in training camp … Dewar finished as the Tips pre-season scoring leader with 10 points in 6 games, becoming the first Silvertip since 2013 (Brayden Low, Manraj Hayer) to earn nine points or more in pre-season play … after surrendering nine goals in the pre-season opener, Luding furnished a 3-0-0 record, one shutout, and .957 save percentage in three appearances … in any format, the Tips earned their first win at ShoWare Center since Game 1 of the 2016 WHL Playoffs, second round.
