PORTLAND – Skyler McKenzie’s goal with 13 seconds left broke a 3-3 tie and helped the Portland Winterhawks sneak by the Everett Silvertips, 4-3 on Sunday at Moda Center before 9,176 fans in WHL action on Sunday.
Portland rallied out of a 3-1 hole in the last six minutes in regulation and goaltender Cole Kehler made 32 saves. Both teams combined for 81 shots on net, and Carter Hart tied his career high with 42 saves – matched twice previously also against Portland. Brandson Hein and Matt Fonteyne scored in the first period for the Silvertips, and an assist by Sean Richards extended his scoring streak to five points in the last four games.
The Silvertips, remaining one point behind first place in the U.S. Division, next visit the Kelowna Rockets on their six game road trip resuming on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. (1380 AM / FM 95.3 / Tips App).
In a game that began, mirror image of Saturday at Tri-City, the Tips sprinted to a 2-0 lead by the end of the first period. Brandson Hein capitalized on a Portland turnover in their own zone and beat Kehler with a spinaround shot at 2:20.
Dominic Zwerger then found the tape of Matt Fonteyne, streaking to the net off the rush and lofting his 17th goal of the season with 4:02 left in the opening frame for a 2-0 lead.
Colton Veloso fed Lane Gilliss for a wrister between the circles, off the rush, which put Portland on the board at a 2-1 deficit at 11:49, but the Tips promptly answered on the next shift. Sean Richards jumped on a Portland turnover and walked out from the right circle, spinning a wrister to the net. Kehler’s rebound kicked to the far post and Tuulola tucked a backhander for a 3-1 lead at 12:07.
Kehler turned away a Cal Babych breakaway in the third period and Portland drew to within a goal on Caleb Jones’ rebound shorthanded goal, unmanned at the left circle at 14:21. Keegan Iverson then connected with Cody Glass at the left circle on a cross-ice pass, whose 32nd goal leveled the game with 2:36 to play.
The Silvertips were caught deep in their own zone in the last 20 seconds of regulation and Glass, who found a loose puck out of a battle in the left corner, found McKenzie open at the net for the eventual game winner.
