PORTLAND – Skyler McKenzie collected a hat trick and the Portland Winterhawks used four unanswered goals to skate past the Everett Silvertips, 5-2 at the Coliseum before 10,095 fans on Saturday in WHL action.

The Silvertips absorbed just their second regulation loss on the road for the season and had a streak of 6-0-1 come to an end despite using back to back goals by Patrick Bajkov and Matt Fonteyne for their only lead in the game.

Cole Kehler stopped 39 shots for Portland.

McKenzie’s rebound goal at 2:31 gave the Winterhawks the lead and a 10-minute delay for the Teddy Bear Toss activities, where the Silvertips took advantage of drained momentum and used Bajkov’s rebound goal at 5:35 for a 1-1 tie.

Fonteyne stashed a backhander just 30 seconds into the second period for a 2-1 lead, but the Winterhawks leveled the game on Keegan Iverson’s 13th goal of the season, a snap shot that hit the water bottle at 6:20 for a 2-2 game. Joachim Blichfeld’s wrister from the right circle put the Winterhawks ahead, 3-2 at 8:17, and McKenzie parked a breakaway goal with a backhander, while shorthanded, with 3:06 left for a 4-2 cushion.

Despite 18 shots by the Silvertips in the third period, McKenzie’s hat trick goal would be the final tally in the game, a post-to-post feed just 50 seconds into the third period.

Mario Petit took his first loss in regulation all season with a 33 save effort.

The Silvertips finish up three games in three days tomorrow, hosting the Spokane Chiefs at 4:05 p.m. (1380 AM / 95.3 FM / Tips App) at XFINITY Arena.
