RECAP / Point in Portland

PORTLAND – Joachim Blichfeld’s wrister off the rush at 3:58 forced the Everett Silvertips to settle for one point, helping the Portland Winterhawks get by, 4-3 in overtime before 3,406 fans at Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Tuesday in WHL action.

The Silvertips ended their three game losing streak in regulation while goaltender Carter Hart made 42 saves. Aaron Irving earned his first goal in a Silvertips uniform and Brian King helped force overtime with a crucial third period goal.

Evan Weinger’s dangle to the net put the Winterhawks ahead at 5:24 of the first period but the Tips responded with back to back goals in 28 seconds in the second period to assume a 2-1 lead. Connor Dewar capitalized off an offensive zone steal and fed Aaron Irving at the blueline, hammering a one timer through traffic to tie the game at 3:17. On the next shift, Dewar and Skoleski took advantage of a late two-on-one and Skoleski banked Dewar’s centering pass for his 9th goal and a 2-1 lead.

Portland tied the game, 2-2 on a power play when Colton Veloso jammed a loose puck through from the top of the crease at 6:02.

The Winterhawks earned their second straight goal just 42 seconds into the third period on Alex Overhardt’s deflection at the net, but King cashed in his second goal at the 9:24 mark when he hammered a rebound from the right circle off an initial Jake Christiansen shot.

Blichfeld’s game winner came off the rush, a wrister from the high slot at 3:58.

Hart’s counterpart, Cole Kehler, made 31 stops.
