RECAP / Point, Taken

EVERETT, Wash. – Michael Herringer stopped Matt Fonteyne in the sixth round to spoil the Everett Silvertips third period comeback, settling for a point in a 3-2 shootout defeat to the Kelowna Rockets before 4,811 fans at XFINITY Arena on Friday in WHL action.

The shootout loss, while ending the Silvertips string of back to back regulation losses, teed up Saturday anticipated showdown with the Seattle Thunderbirds for first place in the U.S. Division. Both teams are separated by just one point and the Tips have nine games to play in the regular season. Limited tickets at XFINITY Arena are available for Saturday’s Silvertips home game, 7:05 p.m. for Navy Night against the Seattle Thunderbirds at www.everettsilvetips.com/ticketpromos.

The Tips fell behind early when Reid Gardiner slammed a rebound at 1:22 after Carter Hart denied Lucas Johansen’s snap shot, moments after the Silvertips had Kelowna hemmed in their own zone.

The Tips responded to nearly tie the game on a Bajkov rebound, but the goal was disallowed for interference in the Kelowna crease. The Silvertips hit one more post and hammered several shots through screens, but ended up trailing by a goal after 20 minutes.

Jake Christiansen sizzled his sixth goal of the season past Herringer with 12:10 to play in the second period, converting a drop pass from Patrick Bajkov for a 1-1 tie, and Hart came through with three impressive saves in the final minutes of the period to preserve the tie.

But a breakdown at the Tips net proved costly with 48.3 left, and Reid Gardiner slammed his second goal of the game from the right circle for a 2-1 Kelowna lead.

Patrick Bajkov, denied earlier, finally cashed in at 11:40 of the third period in the identical spot. Jake Christiansen funneled a shot to the net, with Bajkov stashing the rebound on a backhander and sending XFINITY Arena into delirium with a 2-2 tie.

Devon Skoleski nearly ended the game dramatically in the last minute of regulation, missing a deflection with 38 seconds left as he drove the net. Both teams played through a scoreless overtime and five rounds of a shootout, followed by Nolan Foote’s snapper in the sixth round and Herringer’s stop on a Matt Fonteyne forehand deke.

Hart, tested throughout the evening, made 23 saves.
