RECAP / Power Up!

By Staci C. – Silvertips Staff Writer

EVERETT, Wash. – Three power play goals, Mario Petit’s 22 saves and points from nine teammates helped lift the surging Everett Silvertips to a 4-1 victory over the Tri-City Americans before 4,211 fans at XFINITY Arena on Friday evening.

The Silvertips are now 8-1-1 in their last ten games and are 15-2-1 on home ice. Thanks to two point nights from Graham Millar and Kevin Davis, the Tips have 51 points and are one point behind Prince George for the top seed in the league. With the Silvertips’ win this evening, they are now 3-1-2-0 against the Americans this season. Graham Millar had the game winning goal.

Early into the game, the Americans were able to get on the board as Morgan Geekie slapped a shot in with help from Jordan Topping and Dylan Coghlan at 5:31. Shortly after, Everett drew a four minute high sticking penalty and Dalton Yorke for the Americans went to the box. At 9:22, Dominic Zwerger cycled a puck to Kevin Davis and Davis set up Riley Sutter for an easy tip in to tie up the game at 1-1. The Tips were still on the power play for the double minor and at 11:03, Graham Millar made it 2-1 with helpers from Brian King and Lucas Skrumeda.

Evan Sarthou had a delay of game penalty that resulted in another Everett power play and although there were chances, the Tips were unable to capitalize. Nolan Yaremko and Montana Onyebuchi had a lengthy fight and each got five minutes for fighting and were excused for the remainder of the period. Everett drew a crosschecking penalty towards the end of the first but did not generate any goals.

The game settled down in the second period and we saw fast, end to end hockey. The Tips had a power play three minutes in as Wotherspoon got a roughing penalty for taking liberties with Patrick Bajkov.

The Tips had some chances but the Americans pushed back hard and also generated short handed opportunities that were stopped thanks to Mario Petit. The Americans appeared to tire as the second period continued but kept the game scoreless and drew two back to back penalties that resulted in almost four minutes of power play time. The Americans failed to capitalize and the second period ended with a score of 2-1.

The third period began with a Seth Bafaro holding penalty and six seconds into the power play, Kevin Davis set up Patrick Bajkov for a goal at 1:39 to make the score 3-1. The Tips continued to put the pressure on and generated a ton of chances throughout the third and took advantage of a rested almost full week off. At 8:38, Graham Millar dug out a puck from the corner boards and fed a pass down to Eetu Tuulola where a 2 on 1 break and Tuulola sauced a pass to Devon Skoleski to make the score 4-1.

The Tips continued to fight hard and drew three more penalties which lead to three separate two minute power plays. Although the Tips were unable to capitalize on the last three power plays, they generated a lot of opportunities and ended the period with 17 shots and had 47 shots overall.

Petit’s counterpart, Evan Sarthou, made 43 saves.
