Carter Hart and the Silvertips penalty kill provided a series of stops and blocks in the first period to maintain a scoreless tie until a Keegan Kolesar deflection put the Thunderbirds ahead, 1-0 at 12:35 of the first period.
Nolan Volcan’s rebound goal just 32 seconds into the second period, followed by an Alexander True wrister put the Tips in a 3-0 deficit at 3:33, yet started their rally by chipping away.
Aaron Irving cleaned up a rebound nearly at the right goal line at 7:22 to put the Silvertips on the board, trailing 3-1. Back-to-back power plays then turned the game around, starting with an Eetu Tuulola rebound goal at 9:41, where he stashed a ricochet off Kevin Davis’ point shot.
Dominic Zwerger then sizzled a slap shot past the glove of Carl Stankowski from the left circle, 13:29 of the second period to level the game, 3-3. With the Silvertips completely rolling off momentum, they seized the lead at 4-3 just 1:08 later when Eetu Tuulola stepped into a slap shot from the right circle for his second goal of the game, stunning the ShoWare Center crowd.
The Silvertips began the third period in good shape for the first four minutes, but a failed clearing attempt turned into a Barzal goal from the left circle, a wrister through traffic, at 4:23 to tie the game.
Just 90 seconds into overtime, Barzal ended the game on a rebound goal that he jumped on at the right circle.
