KENNEWICK, Wash. – Dominic Zwerger scored a goal, added a pair of assists, and Mario Petit turned in a 22 save effort to help the Everett Silvertips cruise past the Tri-City Americans in a 5-1 victory before 4,793 fans at Toyota Center on Saturday in WHL action.
Leading wire-to-wire, the win helped the Silvertips keep pace behind the Seattle Thunderbirds for first place in the U.S. Division, trailing by one point with two games in hand. Kevin Davis added a goal and an assist from the blueline while Noah Juulsen and Riley Sutter each earned a pair of assists.
The Silvertips move onto the Rose Quarter to visit the Portland Winterhawks on Sunday, 5:05 p.m. at Moda Center (1380 AM / 95.3 FM / Tips App).
Zwerger didn’t take long to dent the scoreboard with his 26th goal of the season, a snap shot after he and Noah Juulsen seized a Tri-City turnover at the neutral zone. Zwerger cruised in for his shot, past Evan Sarthou’s blocker at 2:26.
Mario Petit kept the lead intact with saves on three high grade looks, including a toe save on Parker Wotherspoon’s half open net bid on a Tri-City power play. Then with 3:46 left in the period, Lucas Skrumeda buried his fourth goal of the season on a backhander between the circles, and the Tips cruised to a 2-0 lead at the end of one period.
After a scoreless second period, the Silvertips opened the levee with a trio of third period goals – including two on the power play. Kevin Davis, seeking a backdoor play, deflected his pass off Tri-City traffic from the right circle just a minute into the period for his seventh goal. Tyler Sandhu finished Jordan Topping’s pass to the net at 8:41 to spoil Petit’s shutout bid, but the Silvertips capitalized on Tri-City’s penalty parade late in the game.
On a five-on-three, Patrick Bajkov wired a one-timer, set up by Davis, from the left circle for a 4-1 lead with 1:40 left. Then after Dakota Krebs was issued a five-minute major for a high stick on Eetu Tuulola, a face-off win led to Sean Richards’ power play snipe from the right circle with 25 seconds left to close out the barrage.
Sarthou made 34 saves to take the loss.
