RECAP: Tips Fall in Kent, 2-0
EVERETT, Wash. – Matt Berlin made 27 saves and Nolan Volcan was the pure supplier of Seattle’s offense with a pair of goals, as the Everett Silvertips fell to the Seattle Thunderbirds, 2-0 before 5,018 fans at ShoWare Center on Saturday in WHL action.
The Tips, splitting the home-and-home series with Seattle, had Dustin Wolf produce 27 saves in his first appearance since Oct. 29. Volcan scored both goals, including an empty netter, in the third period.
The Silvertips return home looking for a rebound result at 4:05 p.m. Sunday (1380 AM / FM 95.3 / Tips App) against the Regina Pats in their only meeting this season. The first 1,000 fans in attendance receive a Silvertips 15th anniversary blanket, courtesy Washington HealthPlanFinder. Tickets are available at www.everettsilvertips.com/tickets.
The first period saw a large share of penalties, scrums and fights. At 3:46 Dawson Butt dropped the gloves with Aaron Hyman at center ice, which set the tone for the rest of the period. Both teams took several penalties but neither team’s special teams were able to capitalize on their power plays. The Silvertips also lost Connor Dewar during the first period as he went down head first next to the T-Birds net and left the ice for the remainder of the game.
Both goaltenders were excellent throughout the first period and the Tips held the shot advantage at 12-4. The game continued to be scoreless throughout the second as both teams failed to capitalize on numerous power plays and on 5-on-5. The Thunderbirds got the shot advantage for the second period with 12 shots versus Everett’s 8 shots.
The third period was the most exciting period of hockey as both teams had many chances but it was truly the goaltender show as Berlin and Wolf both did a tremendous job keeping pucks out of the net. Wolf made a key breakaway save on Noah Philp in the first few minutes, to keep the Silvertips in good position.
Midway through the third, Nolan Volcan broke the scoreless tie as he snuck a loose puck at the right post past Dustin Wolf, making the score 1-0 at 10:25 after Seattle won an offensive zone face-off.
Despite numerous attempts, including a Dawson Butt snap shot that hammered the right post, the Tips were unable to tie the game. With the net empty with less than 10 seconds to go, Volcan got his second of the night and the Thunderbirds finished the game, 2-0.
