EVERETT, Wash. – Kelowna’s two-goal second period backed by a 40-save shutout from goaltender James Porter Jr. was enough to lift the Kelowna Rockets over the Everett Silvertips, 2-0, before 5,383 fans at A.O.T.W. Arena on Friday night.
Rockets’ center Michael Farren potted the opening goal at 3:07 into the second as he earned second honors, while Rockets’ center, and former Silvertip, Mark Liwiski, put Kelowna up 2-0 at 10:56. The Tips fall to having won or gained a point in 25 of the past 30 games, while remaining atop of the Western Conference with 68 points.
“Right off the bat that first period was kind of a sluggish period I thought for us,” Head Coach Dennis Williams said. “I thought the two goals we gave up were ones we kind of ones we gave up.”
UP NEXT: The Silvertips head to Portland in the midst of the three-and-three weekend series. (1380 AM / 95.3 FM / Tips App / WHL Live). The Tips will return home on Sunday, Jan. 20, at 4:05 p.m. to faceoff against the Victoria Royals Tickets available at everettsilvertips.com/tickets
The game abruptly began with a tilt at 0:45 between Silvertips forward Dawson Butt and Liwiski.
It was an evenly fought opening frame as each team’s physicality was on full display. Each side split eight shots on net and two minor penalties. Everett forward Bryce Kindopp had a great scoring opportunity on a short-handed breakaway, eventually padded down by Porter Jr.
Farren put the Rockets up 1-0 at 3:07, as he collected two rebounds in the slot and netted his second attempt on the glove side of Everett goaltender Dustin Wolf. Winger Liam Kindree’s shot from the top of the far circle, which created the initial rebound off a pass from defenseman Lassi Thomson.
Kelowna made it 2-0 at 10:56 as Rockets center Alex Swetlikoff made a sleek centering pass from the bottom of the far circle to Liwiski in the slot, who one-timed a shot blocker side on Wolf. Rockets winger Conner Bruggen-Cate was credited the secondary assist on the play.
The Silvertips third period forecheck was able to land 13 shots on Porter Jr., which kept the puck in the offensive zone while the Tips held the Rockets to only two shots in the final period.
A high-sticking penalty committed by Kindree at 16:07 gave Everett hope, as the Tips pulled Wolf for the extra-attacker with over four minutes remaining in regulation, but fell short in the end.
Wolf finished the game with 18 saves.
