RECAP / Tips Take Flight

EVERETT, Wash. – Buckley native Dawson Butt delivered the eventual game-winner in the third period and the Everett Silvertips never trailed, sinking the Seattle Thunderbirds in a 5-3 victory at XFINITY Arena on Friday in pre-season action.

The Silvertips improved to 4-2-0-0 (8 points) in pre-season play and got 25 saves out of goaltender Dorrin Luding, who had a shutout streak of 102:24 broken in the third period. Sean Richards had a goal and an assist, while ten different Tips collected a point in the game.

The Tips finish pre-season play tomorrow in Kent, visiting the Thunderbirds at ShoWare Center at 7:00 p.m.

Reece Vitelli put the Tips ahead, 1-0 at 13:53 when he finished a spin-around shot from between the circles after Bryce Kindopp and Sean Richards worked a low exchange off the right post.

Richards buried a power play goal just 1:12 into the second period on a deflection at the net, set up by Brandson Hein for a 2-0 lead. Connor Dewar then forced his way to the Seattle net and hiked the lead to 3-0, at 6:58.

Seattle solved Luding just 31 seconds into the third period on Donovan Neuls’ first of two goals in the game. However, Butt responded by driving the net down the left wing and lifting a spectacular finish over Matt Berlin for a 4-1 advantage just 2:05 into the period.

Just 53 seconds later though, Seattle strung back-to-back goals on a Neuls rebound and a Tyler Adams wrister from the left circle, 5:58 into the period to get within a goal.

The Silvertips maintained their lead down the stretch, and Orrin Centazzo finished the scoring with an empty netter from the right circle at 19:38.

Berlin took the loss on 24 stops.

NOTES: The Silvertips scratched Patrick Bajkov, Mark Liwiski, Kyle Walker, Riley Bruce, and goaltenders Dustin Wolf and Carter Hart … Bajkov (Vegas) and Hart (Philadelphia) are still with their respective NHL teams in training camp …  Dewar leads the Tips with eight points in five pre-season games … the Tips home pre-season record finished at 3-1-0-0.
