The first period was a rough start for the Silvertips. Portland got their first goal of the series on their first shot from Jake Gricius to make it 1-0 at the 2:13 mark on a rebound at the crease. The hole deepened midway through the first when Portland got their second from Conor MacEachern to make it 2-0 after he won a battle at the net, 9:32 into the period. Things seemed to settle down for the Tips towards the end of the first but Carter Hart saw a lot of pucks as he faced 17 shots.

The second period didn’t get off to the right start for the Tips as Portland got their third of the night at 2:52 from John Ludvig to make it 3-0 Hawks, a snap shot from the left circle. The Tips got a lot more looks in the second but Cole Kehler withstood the Tips chances. The Tips were able to breakthrough at 12:36 when a nice setup by Ian Walker and Patrick Bajkov led to a nice wrister by Fonteyne to make it 3-1. Sean Richards brought the Tips to within a goal at 18:53 with a sweet top shelf goal from a nice cross-ice pass by Pilon to the left circle. Unfortunately, the one goal difference did not last long as Portland’s Skyler McKenzie beat Hart up high with 1.4 seconds left, set up off the rush by Kieffer Bellows, in the second to make it 4-2 Hawks.

The Tips had more control in the third and were able to get the shot advantage, but were unable to get any shots past Kehler. The teams both got their first power plays of the series in the third but were unable to capitalize on the man advantage. Cody Glass sealed a wrister from the right circle at 9:57 to make it 5-2 Hawks.
