EVERETT, Wash. – The Everett Silvertips (@WHLSilvertips), six-time U.S. Division champions and defending Western Conference champion of the Western Hockey League, announced prospect defenseman Ty Gibson has been named to the U16 Team British Columbia squad for the upcoming 2019 Canada Winter Games, in Red Deer, Alberta from February 15-March 3, 2019.

Gibson, a 2003-born defenseman, was selected by the Sivlertips in the third round (64th overall) in the 2018 WHL Draft and current is second among the South Island Royals (BCMML) defensemen in points (9) and assists (6) in 19 games. He was signed by the Tips to a WHL Standard Player Agreement on Aug. 16 and made his preseason debut on Sept. 1 against the Seattle Thunderbirds.
Last season, the Victoria, B.C. native was tied for 7th in the league scoring among defensemen and led Pacific Coast Academy (CSSBHL) blueliners with 24 points (8g-16a) in 30 games, additionally recording four power play goals and three game winning goals last season. He additionally suited up in four games with Pacific Coast Academy’s Elite 15s squad, earning one assist. Gibson also skated in three CSSBHL postseason games for Pacific Coast Academy last season.

Team BC kicks off the 2019 Canada Winter Games on February 16, 2019 against Manitoba. Team BC will also face Saskatchewan and Alberta in preliminary play prior to the quarterfinals that start on February 20, 2019. Semi-final action will be played on February 21, 2019 and the medal games take place on February 22, 2019. Hockey will be played at both the Kinex Arena and the Centrium in Red Deer. The U16 Program is the second stage in the BC Hockey Program of Excellence (POE), which exposes players, coaches and officials to short term competition. The U16 Program also acts as a precursor to the Hockey Canada U17 POE, which is used to identify and train players and team personnel for provincial, regional and national teams.
