EVERETT, Wash. – A lack of puck luck and a brick wall caused the Tips to fall to the Giants on Friday evening, 2-1 in downtown Everett. After a huge win against Vancouver on Wednesday, it was obvious that the Giants were going to throw everything they got at the Tips tonight and they played a tighter, defensive game.
The Tips had a lot of great opportunities throughout the game but David Tendeck had himself quite the game. Specifically, he made a highlight reel save against Luke Ormsby who had a superb breakaway opportunity.
The game winning goal was not pretty by any means, as it was a slow trickle by Tyler Benson past Dustin Wolf, but it goes to show you that it does not matter what a goal looks like, as long as it gets you the two points. Although Everett had 35 shots in the game, there were quite a few times were over passing occurred and the play was either broken up or the Tendeck was able to easily read the play to make the save.
“I think sometimes we get a little too cute with the puck,” said Tips head coach Dennis Williams. “Instead of just worrying about catching and releasing it and scoring; we don’t need ESPN highlight goals, we just need the puck to cross that goal line.”
Patrick Bajkov and Matt Fonteyne continue their amazing chemistry on the top line with that beauty of a 2-on-1 goal, set up off the rush and via a post-to-post feed. The top line seemed to have the best opportunities of the evening but could not solve Tendeck more than the one time.
Although the Tips lost tonight, they remain first in the U.S. Division, second in the Western Conference and are 8-2-0-0 in their last 10.
