Tips Re-Sign Goaltending Coach Shane Clifford to Contract Extension
EVERETT, Wash. – The Everett Silvertips (@WHLSilvertips) and general manager Garry Davidson announced today the club has re-signed Shane Clifford to a contract extension as goaltending coach. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Clifford, 46, will be entering his 11th overall season with the organization and serves as the Silvertips tutor for its goaltenders. Among the notables are Carter Hart, entering his fourth season between the pipes for the Silvertips as reigning back-to-back WHL Goaltender of the Year. Hart was also the first goaltender selected in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, picked by the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round (48th overall).
“Shane has delivered outstanding results with the development of goaltenders in our system since day one, and we’re excited to continue that relationship, moving forward,” said Davidson. “He is smart, dynamic, and proven. His work ethic is tireless and we’re proud of the work he’s done with Carter Hart, and the potential ahead with future goaltenders in our system.”
“For over a decade, Everett has been like home to me,” said Clifford. “The structure, quality of people, and commitment to top flight results has never changed. I look forward to continue helping enhance the attributes of our goaltending talent, and working together with Dennis Williams and Mitch Love to accomplish the goals of winning and development.”
Clifford’s guidance has helped mold an assortment of top netminders in Silvertips history. In addition to Hart, overager Jeff Harvey helped the ‘Tips capture the Western Conference title in 2004, Mike Wall made his NHL debut with Anaheim in 2006-07 (two seasons after completing his WHL career in Everett), Leland Irving was a first-round NHL draft selection (26th overall) in 2006 with Calgary, and Kent Simpson was selected by Chicago (58th overall) in the second round of 2010.
Clifford was hired in 2005 as Goaltending Coach for the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins, where he worked with future three-time Stanley Cup Champion Marc-Andre Fleury in his second NHL season.
Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Clifford spent a brief professional playing career in the International Hockey League and ECHL before going on to coach for teams across several leagues. He has coached at the pro level with goalies for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (AHL), Johnstown Chiefs (ECHL) and Les Ducs d’Angers (French Elite League), with goalies in the college ranks at Ohio State University (NCAA), and goaltenders across two separate tiers of junior levels for the Youngstown Phantoms (USHL) and Wenatchee Wild (NAHL).
Clifford has owned and operated the Shane Clifford Goalie School just outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania since 2000. His experience with instruction has built the school into one of the premier goalie training facilities in the United States. NHL All-Star goaltender John Gibson (Anaheim), and national champions Kenny Reiter and Parker Milner are among notable graduates.
