ALUMNI WATCH – Byron Froese wearing the C, Carter Hart gets first pro win
FROESE: 2008-10 Tips alum Byron Froese is entering his second season as the captain of the AHL’s Laval Rocket. After playing 48 games with the Montreal Canadiens last season, Froese was sent back to Laval to begin this season with the C on his sweater.
Froese scored 118 points (48g-70a) in two seasons with the Silvertips. He was chosen for the captaincy in Laval by coaching staff and Montreal Canadiens management. As the team moved from St. John’s to Laval in the 2016-17 season, Froese is the first and only captain in the Laval Rocket’s history.
HART: Tips alum Carter Hart made 30 saves on 33 shots for a 6-3 win over Bridgeport in his professional debut with the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Hart kept the Sound Tigers scoreless with 20 shots until 16:54 of the second period, when they capitalized with the help of a power play.
“Every team needs a good foundation, and we have very good base with [Hart] in net,” Lehigh Valley forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel told media following the game.
Hart’s professional debut was full of highlight reel saves, including a breakaway stop against fellow WHL alum Kieffer Bellows.
“I was feeling pucks as they came taking things one play at a time,” Hart told Lehigh Valley media, “and I think that was just my focus throughout the game.”
PRACTICE QUOTES – Bryce Kindopp
RE: On bouncing back…
“Obviously a tough loss there against Portland. We just get back to work every day, set the reset button, like coach Willy always says. Just get back to the little things, hard work at practice today, watch some video, regroup, and just get better every day.”
RE: On the season progressing…
“I think our team is making progress every day. We’re becoming closer and closer. We’re already a family. It’s just fun to come to the rink and work with each other so we’re just going to get better.”
