EVERETT, Wash. – Patrick Bajkov earned his first career playoff hat trick, added an assist, and Carter Hart turned in his fourth career playoff shutout on 26 saves as the Everett Silvertips cruised to a 6-0 victory over the Portland Winterhawks in Game 2 of the second round of the WHL playoffs in front of 5,631 fans at Angel of the Winds Arena. The first period started off extremely well for the Tips as Richards got the scoring going for the Tips at the 1:02 mark with a nice deflection to make it 1-0 Tips with assists credited to Christiansen (left point shot) and Bajkov. The Tips did a great job of not allowing Portland to make clean entries into the offensive zone and the Hawks were unable to get quality shots on Hart. There were a couple of good looks that Portland had throughout the first but Hart was perfect with 10 out of 10 saves. The Tips increased their lead at 13:27 with a nice shot from the left faceoff circle by Patrick Bajkov, thanks to beauty passing from Fonteyne and Richards to make it 2-0 Tips.
The momentum from the first carried into the second as the Tips picked up right where they left off. Martin Fasko-Rudas got his second of the playoffs at 3:23 with a nice tap in after Wyatt Wylie got a shot on Kehler to make it 3-0 Tips. Moments after the goal, John Ludvig was called for a hook and the Tips got on the power play.
Bajkov got his second of the night at 4:51 from a great set-up by Davis and Fonteyne to make it 4-0 Tips on the power play, with Bajkov punching in a rebound at the left circle. The scoring did not stop there for the second; Garrett Pilon got a nice rebound goal at the right dot after Riley Sutter’s shot to make it 5-0 Tips at the 15:13 mark. Portland got more looks in the second but Carter Hart stopped all 11 shots that he faced.
The third period saw a lot of feistiness between the Silvertips and the Winterhawks. By the 5 minute mark, there were 4 Silvertips and 4 Winterhawks in each penalty box as there were several scrums to kick off the third. The teams each got a chance on the power play midway through the third but were unable to capitalize on the man advantage. The time at 17:12 saw another scuffle between the two teams which led to three Winterhawk penalties and two Silvertip penalties, which gave the Tips one last chance on the power play for the evening.
Bajkov buried a slap shot from the top of the left circle his hat trick goal to make it 6-0 Tips at 18:35 and his second power play goal of the night. Carter Hart was perfect in the third and got his second shutout of the playoffs with 26 saves overall.
Notes: Silvertips scratches included Jameson Murray, Ethan O’Rourke, Bronson Sharp, Kyle Walker and Luke Ormsby … Bajkov’s hat trick was the fifth in Silvertips playoff history … the Tips are 5-0 when they score the first goal of the game in the playoffs … the Tips improved to 7-6 at home in Game 2 situations.
