by Scott Blumenfeld

February 9, 2019

EVERETT, Wash. – Silvertips defenseman Jake Christiansen recorded the first hat trick of his WHL career, the first defenseman to ever record a hat trick in franchise history, while goaltender Dustin Wolf delivered a 29-save shutout, his sixth of the season, as the Everett Silvertips cruised past the Portland Winterhawks, 5-0, before 7,117 fans on Star Wars Night at A.O.T.W. Arena on Saturday night in U.S. Division action.

For the 16th straight season, the Silvertips are headed to the playoffs, as they become the first team in the Western Conference to clinch a playoff birth after handing the Winterhawks their first shutout loss of the season.

Wolf’s shutout was the 10th of his career, moving into a fourth place tie on the Silvertips all-time list with Austin Lotz.

“I thought we played a really good game,” Head Coach Dennis Williams said. “It was probably one of our better 60-minute efforts. Special teams were strong, power play was good, penalty kill was really good, killing off 5-on-3s using different guys out there as well. They are one of the top power play teams in the league. I thought our compete was really good and all-in-all I thought for 60 minutes we played really good hockey.”

UP NEXT: The Tips return to action Wednesday, Feb. 9, against the Red Deer Rebels for a 7:05 p.m. faceoff before hitting the road for four-straight games. (1380 AM / 95.3 FM / TuneIn App / WHL Live). Tickets available at www.everettsilvertips.com/tickets.

In a scoreless first period, the Silvertips held the edge on shots, 19-13. Everett possessed great scoring chances during a 4-on-3 Everett man advantage. Everett forward Robbie Holmes and Portland forward Jaydon Dureau received matching roughing penalties at 14:29, followed by a four-minute high-sticking minor on Portland forward Joachim Blichfeld.

Christiansen opened up the second period with a goal at 5:31, where he wired a wrist shot from the slot top shelf off a feed from Zack Andrusiak helped by Wyatte Wylie.

Forward Bryce Kindopp added to the Everett lead, 2-0, at 14:27, with his 30th goal of the season, as he was posted in front of the crease and deflected a Gianni Fairbrother shot from the left circle. Connor Dewar picked up an assist on the play, his 71st point of the season.

Max Patterson found the back of the net to put Everett up 3-0 at 18:49 with a shot from the left circle that went five-hole on Winterhawks goaltender Joel Hofer. Fairbrother picked up his second assist of the night with a feed from the blue line while defenseman Sahvan Khaira also recorded an assist on the play.

Christiansen notched his second goal as a wrist shot from the point found the back of the net to extend the Silvertips’ lead to 4-0 at 19:26, with assist from Andrusiak and Kindopp.

At 8:08 in the third, Christiansen became the first defenseman in franchise history to record a hat trick, as he collected a Kindopp rebound off the pad of Hofer, and one-timed it blocker side. Andrusiak picked up his third assist of the game on the play.

Everett landed 53 total shots on goal, while Wolf turned away 29-of-29.
