TIPS WIN // Special Teamwork
PORTLAND – Dustin Wolf turned in 30 saves while the penalty kill was perfect on ten opportunities against the league’s #1 ranked power play unit, to lift the Everett Silvertips to a perfect record in three days and a 4-2 victory over the host Portland Winterhawks on Sunday before 6,037 fans at Moda Center in WHL action.
The Silvertips jumped into first place in the U.S. Division (6-3-0-0, 12 points) and won for the sixth time in seven games, completing their 13th 3-0 run in franchise history through a three-game, three-day schedule set up. The Tips killed a pair of separate double minors and earned additional goals from Martin Fasko-Rudas, Akash Bains, and an empty netter from Bryce Kindopp.
The Tips also ended Portland’s run of 5-0-0-1, who also didn’t play since an 8-2 win over Edmonton on Wednesday. By the end of the night, the Silvertips improved to 88.9 percent on the penalty kill, second in the entire WHL.
UP NEXT: The Silvertips continue their seven-game road trip on Friday against the host Brandon Wheat Kings, 5:00 p.m. (1520 AM / 101.1 FM / Tips App / WHL Live) at Westman Place. The Tips return home after a seven-game road trip on Friday, Nov. 2 against the Tri-City Americans at 7:35 p.m. Tickets are on sale at www.everettsilvertips.com/tickets.
The Tips penalty kill became occupied with four Portland power plays through the first period but after killing of a double minor to a Riley Sutter high sticking penalty, Martin Fasko-Rudas was left unchecked at the net and deposited Sutter’s feed for a 1-0 lead at 15:25.
Wolf made 11 saves in the first period as the Tips also maneuvered through a shortened fifth Portland power play, neutralized by Jared Freaderich’s holding penalty with 1:11 left.
The Tips escaped another penalty early in the second period and moments after returning to five skaters, Dawson Butt (who was stopped on a breakaway) flipped a puck to Akash Bains, who buried his first goal of the season at 5:07 of the second period for a 2-0 lead.
Reece Newkirk got the Winterhawks on the board with a backdoor finish at the left post at 14:10 for a 2-1 deficit, but Wyatte Wylie snuck a wrister from the blueline past Shane Farkas’ glove just 3:03 later to put the Tips up by a pair of goals.
After the Tips turned the puck over in their own zone, Mason Mannek’s tape-to-tape pass was finished by Robbie Fromm-Delorme with 1:36 left in the period for a 3-2 deficit.
The Tips balanced the third period with a tied shot count, 8-8, and sealed the game on Bryce Kindopp’s empty netter behind the Winterhawks defense with 24 seconds left.
Farkas took the loss with 16 saves.
