Skyler McKenzie’s first of two goals at 13:48 of the first period put the Winterhawks ahead 1-0 on a rebound in the paint, but the Tips forged a 1-1 tie at 13:33 of the second period on Matt Fonteyne’s team leading 25th goal. Fonteyne, stationed between the circles, finished Garrett Pilon’s centering pass from the left circle.
Just 1:16 later, Martin Fasko-Rudas crashed the net for his second goal for a 2-1 Tips edge, after Bryce Kindopp beat an icing call and planted a low shot on net for a rebound.
Kieffer Bellows buried a wrister off the rush, from the right circle to tie the game at 2-2 just 1:18 into the third period. But Connor Dewar’s power play goal put the Tips ahead again, 3-2 at 7:18 as he successfully defected Patrick Bajkov’s pass from the right circle.
McKenzie tied the game, 3-3 as he deflected Kieffer Bellows’ pass to the net with 4:34 to play. Just 13 seconds later, Garrett Pilon was nailed for a four minute, double minor penalty for high sticking, but the Tips penalty kill successfully maneuvered the penalties and forced overtime.
The Tips outshot Portland, 3-2 in the OT period and nearly won the game as Ondrej Vala won a battle in the left corner and drove the net, but Cole Kehler denied Vala’s game winning bid with a left pad stop.
The Tips traded a Patrick Bajkov (2nd round) with a Kieffer Bellows snipe in the third round, but Carter Hart denied Ryan Hughes to set up Fonteyne’s winner. Fonteyne streaked to the net and snuck a snap shot over Kehler for the game winner.
Kehler made 39 saves.
