TIPS WIN » The Kennewick Comeback

KENNEWICK, Wash. – Kevin Davis capped off the greatest comeback in Everett Silvertips history, to date, on a blast from center point for a game winning power play goal at 5:58 of sudden death to lift the Silvertips to the Western Conference championship and a berth in the Rogers WHL Championship Series in a 6-5 overtime victory over the Tri-City Americans in Game 6 of the Western Conference championship series. The Silvertips won the series, 4-2 and earned their second Western Conference title in franchise history before 3,033 fans at Toyota Center on Monday.

The Silvertips rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the third period with three goals in a span of 4:37 and Garrett Pilon tied the game just 36 seconds after Davis scored his first goal of the night to draw the Tips to within a goal. After Dylan Coghlan was called for tripping in overtime, Davis was set up inside of the blueline and hammered a one timer through traffic to send the Tips spilling onto the ice to celebrate.

The goal was reminiscent of the Tips first trip to the WHL Finals, when Jeff Schmidt’s OT winner in Kelowna made the Tips Western Conference Champions in 2004. The Silvertips will battle the Swift Current Broncos in the Rogers WHL Championship Series, starting Friday and will come home for Game 3 of the series in downtown Everett on Tuesday, May 8.

Patrick Bajkov, who scored twice in the first period, put the Tips ahead on a nifty backdoor play at 8:54, set up by Matt Fonteyne for a 1-0 lead. Morgan Geekie buried a cross-ice pass from the right circle, tying the game at 11:25 and Bajkov restored the lead with 1:37 to go on a blast from between the circles.

Tri-City followed by erupting for four unanswered goals, starting in the second period. Kyle Olson’s one-timer at the left circle, his first goal in the playoffs, tied the game at 1:19 and Michael Rasmussen buried the Americans’ second power play goal at 6:30 on a rebound for a 3-2 lead, lasting through the second period.

Olson earned his second goal at 4:37 of the third period on a wrister from inside the blueline and Jordan Topping scored on a partial breakaway at 8:52 to put the Silvertips in a three-goal deficit, facing the danger of Game 7 unless they could rally.

Connor Dewar sparked the rally on a rebound goal off the backboards at 9:52 to cut the deficit to 5-2 and Davis, minutes after narrowly missing from a blast between the circles, came through with 6:07 left to blast the Silvertips to a one goal deficit.

On the next shift, Pilon manufactured a turnover at the left circle, drove to the net, and while off balance forced a backhander through Patrick Dea’s five hole to level the game at 5-5 with 5:31 left in regulation.

The Silvertips, boosted by the comeback, continued with furious offensive zone pressure and played to the tie at the end of regulation. Connor Dewar nearly ended the game between the circles and Sean Richards almost parked a loose puck off the back of Patrick Dea.

Davis received a pass by Connor Dewar from the right corner, and unleashed a one-timer through traffic to end the game and series at 5:58, sending the Tips to spill off the bench in pandemonium.

Carter Hart earned the victory with 18 saves in net.

Notes: Silvertips scratches included Martin Fasko-Rudas, Jameson Murray, Luke Ormsby, Kyle Walker and Ty Westgard … the Tips are 2-2 in four playoff series against Tri-City … the win was their first in overtime since Cal Babych scored in the 5th overtime at Victoria, last season in a first round series victory, 4-2 … the Tips scored the first goal in every game of the series.
