The Tips weathered a 16-9 shots disadvantage in the first period with a Connor Dewar deflection goal at the net with 1:01 to play, sneaking in Wyatte Wylie’s right point shot for his fourth goal of the season.
Portland outshot the Silverips, 12-3 in the second period and Kieffer Bellows was stopped by Hart’s pads on a breakaway after a Portland penalty kill. Then with the Winterhawks threatening late in the period, Cody Glass jumped on a rebound at the left circle. Hart wielded his stick to deny Glass with a remarkable diving save, covering inside of the left post to preserve the lead.
Brendan DeJong’s left circle shot deflected off Silvertips traffic for a 1-1 tie just 5:14 into the third period, and after the Tips were whistled for a delay of game penalty for a cleared puck over the defensive zone glass, Jokiharju fired a bullet through traffic from the left side with 2:07 left to send Moda Center into a frenzy with a late 2-1 lead.
Off the next face-off, the Tips immediately gained zone entry with Connor Dewar carrying the puck through the left wing. Dewar fired a low shot off Cole Kehler’s pads which leaked to the right circle, and the rebound was slammed in by Garrett Pilon with 1:58 to play and level the game, 2-2.
After the Tips worked the puck back in less than a minute later, Patrick Bajkov set up Wyatte Wylie at the blueline. Wylie uncorked a wrister through traffic that deflected off Kehler and trickled into the open net with the Silvertips crashing for a rebound, rallying for an incredible 3-2 lead with 1:12 to play in regulation. The goal was the first of Wylie’s postseason career.
Hart had to make a difficult save on Skyler McKenzie on the next shift with Kehler pulled for a sixth attacker, but the Tips drained the clock to preserve the come-from-behind victory.
Kehler made 23 saves for the loss.
