Everett Makes Trade with Victoria

EVERETT – The Everett Silvertips today announced a swap of 1996-born players that finds Everett gaining the WHL rights to AJHL defenseman Mark Nerland from the Victoria Royals in exchange for forward Mitch Skapski.  The team has also re-assigned defenseman Lucas Skrumeda to the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.  The Silvertips’ roster now stands at 22 players (12 forwards, eight defensemen and two goaltenders).

Nerland, 16, currently plays for the Camrose Kodiaks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.  In eight games so far this season, the 6-foot-2, 190-pound blueliner has registered two assists and four penalty minutes.  A native of Okotoks, Alberta, Nerland spent last season at the AAA Midget level with the Strathmore UFA Bisons, where he totaled nine points (2g/7a) and 30 penalty minutes.

Skapski, 17, appeared in one game for the Silvertips this season.  He skated in 34 contests for Everett last year as a 16-year-old rookie, scoring two goals and collecting ten penalty minutes after joining the club from the BCHL mid-way through the season.  Hailing from Abbotsford, BC, Skapski was selected by Portland in the fourth round (86th overall) of the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft.  He was acquired by Everett along with Ben Betker and Tyler Sandhu in the trade the sent defenseman Seth Jones to the Winterhawks.

Skrumeda, 17, will now report to the Winnipeg Blues of the MJHL.  The Winnipeg native skated in five preseason contests for the Silvertips (recording two assists) and made the team’s season-opening roster, but had not yet appeared in a regular season game with Everett.  He spent his 16-year-old season with the Midget AAA Winnipeg Thrashers, recording 28 points (7g/21a) and 20 penalty minutes in 43 games.

Next up for the Silvertips is a trip to eastern Washington for a divisional bout with the Spokane Chiefs Friday night at 7:05 pm.  Pregame radio coverage begins at 6:30 pm on Classic Country 1520 KXA.  The ‘Tips will then return to Comcast Arena for two straight home games Saturday at 7:05 pm against Kamloops and Sunday at 4:05 pm vs. Swift Current.
