EVERETT – Veteran forwards Ivan Nikolishin, Logan Aasman and Tyler Sandhu each posted a game-high three points during the Everett Silvertips annual intrasquad game Sunday afternoon at Comcast Arena, with Team Green knocking off Team Grey by a final score of 6-3. The Green vs. Grey game concluded Everett’s 2014 Training Camp after the third-annual Volunteer Cup title was presented to Team Green (4-0 in the weekend’s scrimmages) Sunday morning in honor of Marc Thompson, builder & driver of the Silvertips FANboni.
Nikolishin’s two goals and one assist paced the victors on the Green side, while Carson Stadnyk and Sean Mallonee chipped in two assists each. Goaltender Austin Lotz turned away all 15 shots faced in the first 30 minutes for Green before Mario Petit came in to deny 15 of 18. In addition to three points from Aasman (2g/1a) and Sandhu (2a), Team Grey also got two assists from 15-year-old Blake Bergquist. Goaltenders Dayton Rasmussen and Nik Amundrud shared duties in net for Team Grey, with Rasmussen stopping 19 of 22 shots and Amundrud shutting down 24 of 27.
Team Green drew first blood after Patrick Bajkov took the initial shot and Ivan Nikolishin picked up the rebound in tight before lifting a shot to the top corner. Carson Stadnyk controlled play behind the net late in the period and fed a pass to Riley Sutter, who one-timed a shot along the post to give Team Green a 2-0 lead after the first 20 minutes.
Brayden Low gave Team Green a 3-0 advantage after his shot took went off the back of Rasmussen and in the net. Both teams switched goaltenders midway through the second with Team Green holding a 22-15 lead in shots. Logan Aasman got Team Grey on the board with six minutes to go in the period as he fired a shot to the top right corner from the low slot. The score stood at 3-1 for Team Green heading into the final period.
Team Grey pulled to within one after some nice stick work by Aasman, who scored his second goal of the night early in the third. Team Green went on the powerplay midway through the third and Ivan Nikolishin cashed in the rebound of a shot by Kevin Davis for his second of the night. Grey pulled back within one when Tyler Sandhu slid a backhand shot between his legs, off a skate in front and behind goaltender Mario Petit. Carson Stadnyk made a nice crossing pass to Remi Laurencelle for a goal with three minutes left to give Team Green a 5-3 lead before Gunnar Wegleitner scored into an empty net to give Green the 6-3 victory.
Final shots in the game were 47-33 in favor of Team Green.
Everett opens the exhibition season by hosting the rest of the U.S. Division and the Victoria Royals for the 11th annual Holiday Inn Preseason Classic over Labor Day weekend at Comcast Arena. The Silvertips are in action at 7:00 pm each evening during the tournament, which features a total of nine games from Aug. 29-31.
