EVERETT – Rookie goaltender Carter Hart made a season-high 41 saves and the Everett Silvertips matched their best offensive output of the season, running away with a 7-2 victory over the Calgary Hitmen Friday night at XFINITY Arena. By knocking off the hottest team in the league, the ‘Tips denied Calgary a sweep of the U.S Division and increased their division lead to four points over the Portland Winterhawks.
Carson Stadnyk (2g/1a) and Ivan Nikolishin (3a) were the point leaders for the night with three each. Kohl Bauml and Nikita Scherbak registered a goal and an assist while Ben Betker picked up a pair of helpers. Dawson Leedahl, Matt Fonteyne and Brayden Low rounded out the Silvertips scoring for the night as Everett reached seven goals in a game for the third time this year. Carter Hart (13-4-2-1) was at his best in the second period with 20 saves on 21 shots to help the ‘Tips build a 5-2 lead despite being outshot 33-18 through 40 minutes.
Everett was quick to get on the board, scoring just 34 seconds in as Kohl Bauml fed the puck from behind the net to Dawson Leedahl for a quick goal to open the scoring. The Silvertips struck again minutes later on the powerplay after Carson Stadnyk put in his own rebound to make it 2-0. Silvertips goaltender Carter Hart made numerous quality saves to keep the Calgary off the board until Adam Tambellini broke through late in the first to get the Hitmen on the board. Shots were 12-8 for the visiting team after 20 minutes of play.
The Silvertips took two early penalties in the second and the Hitmen jumped to a 28-11 advantage on the shot clock by the halfway point of the period. Despite the lopsided shots, Everett found the back of the net after Matt Fonteyne rushed to the net and put a centering pass off a Calgary defender and into the net. After killing off three consecutives penalties, the Silvertips got a powerplay of their own, but Tambellini recorded his second goal of the night for Calgary on a partial shorthanded breakaway to make it a 3-2 game. The ‘Tips quickly responded on the remaining powerplay when Kohl Bauml tipped in a point shot by Ben Betker to put Everett back up by two. With less than a minute to go in the frame, Lucas Skrumeda purposely shot wide of the net, which allowed Brayden Low to put in the rebound off the back boards and give the Silvertips a 5-2 lead after two.
The Silvertips maintained a three-goal lead early in the third, but a five-minute major penalty to Betker gave the Hitmen a chance to get back in the game. Everett weathered the storm and scored again on the ensuing shift as Nikita Scherbak skated into the Calgary zone, cut to the slot and fired a shot into the top corner to put the ‘Tips up 6-2 at the midway point. Shortly after, Carson Stadnyk scored his second of the night to give the Silvertips a 7-2 lead, receiving a pass from Nikolishin and stickhandling through the defense before putting home his 25th goal of the year. Hart finished out his solid night as the ‘Tips skated to a 7-2 victory.
Final shots 43-29 for Calgary, a season-most surrendered by the Silvertips. Calgary goaltender Mack Shields (25-15-0-2) stopped 13 of 18 shots faced during 39 minutes in net and took the loss before Brendan Burke came in late in the second and stopped 9 of 11 to finish the game. The Silvertips’ powerplay went 2 for 4 and killed off all three Hitmen powerplays.
