Mappin, Sandhu to Play in U17 Tourney
RED DEER, AB (League Release) – Rookie Everett Silvertips forwards Ty Mappin and Tyler Sandhu were among the players named this afternoon when Hockey Alberta and BC Hockey announced the 22-player roster that will represent Team Pacific at the 2013 World Junior Under 17 Hockey Challenge. The event runs from December 29, 2012 to January 4, 2013 in Victoriaville/Drummondville, Quebec.
Sandhu (Richmond, BC) is currently tied for fourth on the Silvertips with five goals and 14th among all WHL rookies with nine total points so far this season. Originally a second-round bantam pick of Portland, Sandhu was acquired in a trade with the Winterhawks in May. Mappin (Big Valley, AB) was Everett’s first-round selection (7th overall) in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft. The skilled 5-foot-11, 170-pound centerman has scored one goal and assisted on four others in 19 games for the Silvertips this year.
Team Pacific is comprised of 11 players from BC and 11 players from Alberta. Hockey Alberta and BC Hockey each identified 34 U17 male athletes (4 G, 12 D, 18 F) from their respective provincial evaluation camps to participate in the joint regional camp in July. From the regional camp, these players were evaluated during the first part of their club’s team season by the Team Pacific evaluators. 18 of the 22 players selected to Team Pacific currently play in the Western Hockey League.
“With this being the first year of the combined regional camp, it made for a unique evaluation process,” said Team Pacific Head Coach Jason Becker. “Wade Klippenstein, the Pacific region head scout, has done a great job in creating a fair and positive evaluation process.”
