Pats Hand Everett First Loss of Road Trip
REGINA, SK – Nikita Scherbak’s team-leading 19th goal of the season was the only score of the night for the Everett Silvertips in a 3-1 loss to the Regina Pats Wednesday night at the Brandt Centre. The defeat was the first of Everett’s East Division road swing and snapped a three-game win streak. The ‘Tips conclude the trip Friday and Saturday with games in Moose Jaw and Swift Current.
Scherbak’s goal, which tied the game at one in the first period, pushed his season-high point streak to ten straight games and gave him 51 points for the season. Remi Laurencelle and Brayden Low drew the assists. The Silvertips’ red-hot powerplay unit was held in check on four opportunities, while Regina scored on one of three chances.
The teams traded momentum in the first period, but it was the Pats who started quicker and scored midway through on the powerplay with a put-back from Braden Christoffer making it 1-0 Regina. Scherbak evened the score minutes later off a Laurencelle faceoff win in the offensive zone, one-timing a perfect shot into the top corner over the glove hand of goaltender Tyler Brown. Shots were 10-8 Pats in a first period that ended 1-1.
Regina gradually built momentum as the second frame progressed, killing off two Everett powerplays for the second straight period and ending up with an 18-6 edge in shots. It took the Pats until the final minutes of the period to re-gain the advantage however, as a defensive zone turnover led to Pavel Padakin’s goal that put the ‘Tips down 2-1 after 40 minutes.
The Silvertips gave Tyler Brown (3-3) more work in third period with a 12-7 shot advantage, but were unable to beat the rookie netminder again as he finished with 25 saves. Jesse Gabrielle’s goal at 13:18 of the third put Everett down by two and provided the final 3-1 margin. Austin Lotz (17-9-1-1) made 32 stops as the ‘Tips were outshot 35-26 for the night.
