Scherbak Hat Trick Highlights Win over Rebels
EVERETT – Nikita Scherbak recorded his first career hat trick as the Everett Silvertips fought off the Red Deer Rebels for a 6-3 victory Wednesday night at XFINITY Arena. Their win streak now at five overall and four on home ice, the Silvertips stand at 11-1-2-1 this season through 16 games.
Scoring Everett’s last three goals of the night, Scherbak took over the team lead with ten goals and 20 points this season. Carson Stadnyk scored a goal and assisted on another and Ivan Nikolishin recorded two assists to tie Stadnyk for second on the club with 19 points. Graham Millar and Brayden Low also scored goals as the ‘Tips took a 3-0 first-period lead before Red Deer twice got back within one goal.
The Silvertips dominated the first period and scored as many goals as the Rebels had shots. Ivan Nikolishin set up the first score as he was about to cut around the net before slipping a no-look backhand pass to Carson Stadnyk for a tap-in goal. Graham Millar followed later in the period when his shot from high in the zone deflected off traffic in front and in to extend Everett’s lead. A minute later Brayden Low sped down the left boards fired a shot just inside the far post to make it 3-0. The ‘Tips also outshot the Rebels 10-3 in the first 20 minutes of play.
Red Deer got two quick goals from Connor Bleackley and former Silvertip Tyler Sandhu to start the second period and suddenly get back within 3-2 less than four minutes in. With the Silvertips on the powerplay at 8:25, Nikita Scherbak ripped a low shot to the far corner from the right circle to put Everett back up by two. The Rebels again climbed back within one late in the period as Bleackley scored his second of the night off an Everett turnover to make it a 4-3 game heading into the dressing rooms. Shots were 15-13 in favor of the ‘Tips after two.
The teams exchanged penalties midway through the third, but the score remained 4-3 after both infractions were served. Scherbak again gave the Silvertips some breathing room at the 11:47 mark, putting home the rebound of a long Kohl Bauml shot for his second goal of the night to extend the ‘Tips lead to 5-3. Patrick Bajkov made a diving play late in game to get the puck out of the Everett zone and help set up the empty-net goal that completed the hat trick for Scherbak. The Silvertips finished the 6-3 victory with a 23-20 advantage on the shot clock.
Silvertips goaltender Austin Lotz (9-1-1-1) turned away 17 of 20 shots, while Taz Burman (1-3-0-0) stopped 17 of 22 for the Rebels. Everett went 1 for 3 on the power-play and denied Red Deer on two powerplay attempts.
