EVERETT – The Everett Silvertips opened their exhibition schedule with the first of three games during the 9th annual Holiday Inn Preseason Classic Friday night, falling to the Tri-City Americans 4-1 at Comcast Arena. The Silvertips iced a young lineup consisting of 14 WHL rookies for Friday’s game, giving ten returners the first preseason game off.
Rookie center Carson Stadnyk notched Everett’s only goal in the loss, with Stathis Soumelidis and Ryan Chynoweth assisting. Andy Desautels and Troy Trombley split time in net. The Americans outshot the Silvertips 29-22 and scored once on four powerplays, while the ‘Tips were 0 for 4.
Shots were hard to come by in the opening minutes before Justin Feser started the scoring with a powerplay goal, rifling a wrist shot into the top corner at 6:10. The Americans made it a 2-0 lead late in the period as Philip Tot tapped in a loose puck behind Andy Desautels with just 1:21 left in the frame.
In the second period, Everett couldn’t manage to capitalize on a pair of powerplays to cut into the deficit. Tri-City then added another late goal as Michal Plutnar’s quick shot from along the boards snuck past a screened Troy Trombley to make it 3-0 after two.
The Silvertips finally broke through for their first goal of the preseason midway through the third period. Carson Stadnyk finished a nice rush by backhanding a Stathis Soumelidis pass into the net to make it 3-1. The momentum was short-lived however, as Feser quickly scored from beside the net off an odd carom to put the deficit back at three and provide the final 4-1 margin.
Andy Desautels and Troy Trombley each played exactly half the game in net, with Trombley turning aside 17 of 19 shots in the last 30 minutes after Desautels stopped eight of ten in the first 30. Eric Comrie stopped all eight shots he faced in the first half of the contest for Tri-City before 15-year-old Evan Sarthou came in to take 13 saves on 14 shots.
The tournament opened earlier Friday with the Seattle Thunderbirds facing the Portland Winterhawks in the afternoon. Seattle’s Branden Troock tied that game at three with just over five minutes left in regulation, but the Winterhawks still took the 4-3 win on an overtime goal from Alex Schoenborn.
Next up for the Silvertips is a matchup with the Spokane Chiefs on day two of the tournament Saturday at 7:00 pm. Saturday’s afternoon game pits Tri-City against Portland at 3:00 pm.
