EVERETT – The Everett Silvertips gave the top-seeded Portland Winterhawks a hearty fight in the first round of the 2013 WHL playoffs before seeing their 10th Anniversary season come to a close Monday night with a 5-1 loss in Game 6 at Comcast Arena. Portland advances to the second round of the postseason after winning the series four games to two, while the youthful Silvertips will use the valuable playoff experience as they look toward the future.
Reid Petryk scored the lone Silvertips goal in Game 6, giving Everett an early lead with the only shorthanded goal of the series. Austin Lotz (2-4) was peppered with 52 Portland shots in the contest and stopped 47 of them to keep the ‘Tips within striking distance for much of the night. The Winterhawks outshot Everett 52-13 in total and scored on two of five powerplay chances to finish the series with 13 powerplay goals. The Silvertips were scoreless on three powerplay opportunities.
Everett took an early penalty to put Portland on the man-advantage, but it was the Silvertips who would capitalize on the chance. Reid Petryk intercepted a Winterhawks pass at the blue line and raced ahead on a breakaway, beating Mac Carruth to put the ‘Tips ahead in the opening minutes. Portland tied the game at one on a goal from Seth Jones, who lifted a backhand shot over the shoulder of Austin Lotz. Oliver Bjorkstrand gave the ‘Hawks the lead when a rebound in front found his stick blade before he slid it past Lotz. Shots on goal were 17-8 in favor of Portland through the first period.
The Winterhawks tacked on two powerplay goals the second, giving them a 4-1 lead heading into the final period. After a multitude of shots on the Silvertips net, Oliver Bjorkstrand ricocheted a shot in off the post for his second goal of the night. A second powerplay late in the period put Portland up by three after Seth Jones stepped in from the blue line and fired a shot to the top corner off a blocked pass. After 40 minutes of play the Winterhawks led 37-12 on the shot clock.
Portland scored once more in the third period as Taylor Leier finished off a good cycling play with the Winterhawks’ fifth goal of the night. Everett was unable generate much offensively in the third period as the ‘Hawks finished off the 5-1 victory. Mac Carruth (4-2) ended the night with 12 saves and the win in goal.
