Silvertips Slip Past Seattle in Shootout

KENT – Trailing late in the third period, the Everett Silvertips tied the game and then pulled out a 3-2 shootout victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds Saturday night at the ShoWare Center.  The ‘Tips are now 3-0 against the T-Birds this season and 15-4-2-1 on the season after snapping a two-game losing streak.

Patrick Bajkov and Graham Millar scored goals for the Silvertips, with Seattle scoring twice in between to take a 2-1 lead early in the third period.  Goaltender Austin Lotz (11-3-1-1) turned away 31 of 33 shots in 65 minutes and stopped all five Seattle attempts in the shootout.  Carter Cochrane scored the only goal of the shootout to propel Everett to the win.

Nikita Scherbak was injured late in the second period and had to be stretchered off the ice before being transported to Valley Medical Center as a precaution.  The latest postgame update indicated a potential back injury for Scherbak, who had movement in all of his extremities.

The Silvertips opened the scoring midway through the first as Kohl Bauml’s shot off a feed from Scherbak caromed off a Thunderbird to Patrick Bajkov, who spun around and fired a shot paast goaltender Taran Kozun. Shots were tied at eight with the ‘Tips up by one after the first 20 minutes.

Seattle made quick work of a powerplay to tie the game at one in the second period.  Keegan Kolesar made a blind backhand shot in front of the Everett net on a rebound that slipped inside the post.  Scherbak’s injury came with 1:34 left in the frame when he to took an awkward hit into the boards and crumpled to the ice.  After a lengthy delay while he was attended to, the period ended with the game tied at one.

The Thunderbirds took the lead 17 seconds into the third when Justin Hickman fired a shot into the top corner from the right wing boards.  On their third powerplay of the period and with less than three minutes left on the clock, Graham Millar tipped in an Ivan Nikolishin shot to tie the game at two.  After overtime, Austin Lotz denied each Seattle shooter before Carter Cochrane scored the only goal in the fifth round to give the ‘Tips a 3-2 victory.

The T-Birds finished with a 33-31 advantage on the shot clock.  Taran Kozun (8-8-2-2) stopped 29 of 31 shots in regulation and four of five shootout attempts for Seattle.  Everett went 1 for 4 on the powerplay, while the Thunderbirds were 2 for 3.
