Tips bury Tri-City with four goal third period
EVERETT – The Everett Silvertips generated a four-goal outburst in the third period on their way to a 6-3 victory over the Tri-City Americans Friday night at Comcast Arena. The win puts Everett back into a tie for second place in the U.S. Division and just three points of the division lead at 24-13-5-1 for the year.
Jujhar Khaira enjoyed a career night with two goals, two assists and a +3 rating on his way to being named first star of the game. Josh Winquist netted a goal and assist and Ivan Nikolishin chipped in two helpers, while Patrick Bajkov, Kohl Bauml and Carson Stadnyk all lit the lamp for Everett as well. The ‘Tips are 3-0-1-0 against the Americans this season with four meetings remaining.
Everett opened the scoring midway through the first period when Josh Winquist made a nifty backhand pass to Patrick Bajkov at the far post for a one-timer into an open net. Tri-City tied the game at one after a shot from Travis Hamonic squeaked between the legs of Daniel Cotton from the left boards. Shots were 13-7 in favor of the Silvertips after 20 minutes.
Everett took a 2-1 lead seven minutes into the second as Ben Betker’s long shot from the blue line was redirected into the net by Kohl Bauml in front. The Americans tied it again less than four minutes later after a collision at the blue line led to Devon McAndrews’ breaking into the ‘Tips zone and sending a shot through a screen and past Cotton to tie the game at two. Austin Lotz then took over in net as the ‘Tips continued to lead 25-12 on the shot clock at the end of the second frame.
With Everett on the powerplay early in the third, Ivan Nikolishin skated down the right boards and sent a nice pass in front to Jujhar Khaira, who fired a shot past Evan Sarthou to give the Silvertips another lead. The ‘Tips then extended the lead to 4-2 as Josh Winquist cut to the middle off the ice from the boards and deked around a defender to get open before releasing a hard wrist shot into the top corner at 7:04. The Americans responded quickly with a wrap-around goal from Lucas Nickles that trickled over the pad of Lotz to bring Tri-City back within one.
Everett increased the lead once again as Khaira won a race to a puck in the corner and out-muscled the defense to feed Carson Stadnyk for a one-timer in front to make it 5-3 with less than six minutes to go. Khaira scored his second of the night less than two minutes later on a pass from Dawson Leedahl to give the Silvertips a 6-3 victory.
The ‘Tips held the Americans to only two shots in the third period to end with a final shot advantage of 40-15. Austin Lotz (17-11-2-1) earned the victory in goal with five saves and one goal against in just over 29 minutes. Cotton saves seven of nine shots in 30:48. Evan Sarthou (3-4-0-0) took the loss despite 34 saves for Tri-City.
