Tips down Winterhawks in tournament finale
EVERETT – Dawson Leedahl and Cole MacDonald each recorded their first goals in a Silvertips uniform to give Everett a 2-1 win against the Portland Winterhawks in the final game of 9th annual Holiday Inn Preseason Classic Saturday evening at Comcast Arena. The Silvertips are now 2-1 in exhibition play with four preseason games remaining.
Leedahl and MacDonald each scored for the ‘Tips while Reid Petryk logged the lone assist. Troy Trombley was unblemished in net, stopping all 12 shots he faced in just under 30 minutes of play. Austin Lotz then came in to stop 18 of 19 Portland shots to finish the game. Everett was also a perfect 6-for-6 on the penalty kill, helping secure the victory.
After a scoreless first period, the Silvertips came out strong in the second and notched two unanswered goals. Dawson Leedahl tallied his first point of the preseason after creating a turnover at center ice and scoring on a breakaway. The ‘Tips followed up with their first powerplay goal as Cole MacDonald held the puck in at the blue line before firing a slapshot past goaltender Adin Hill to make it 2-0.
The Silvertips killed off two penalties early in the third, but Portland recorded their first goal of the game halfway through the period. Austin Lotz made the initial save for the Silvertips, but Oliver Bjorkstrand was there to bang in the rebound and bring Portland within one goal. Everett played a strong defensive game for the remainder of the third to keep their lead and earn a 2-1 victory.
Lotz and Trombley combined to stop 30 of 31 total shots as the Winterhawks outshot the ‘Tips 31-20. Adin Hill stopped 11 of 13 in net for Portland, while Brendan Burke saved all seven shots he faced. Everett also recorded one powerplay goal in five opportunities.
The Silvertips are on the road next weekend for a pair of games at the Tri-City Americans preseason tournament in Kennewick. The ‘Tips face-off against the Spokane Chiefs on Friday and the Kootenay Ice on Saturday. Both games are set to begin at 11:00 am.
