EVERETT – The Everett Silvertips and Vancouver Giants battled it out for over 60 minutes before Ivan Nikolishin’s overtime goal gave the Silvertips a 4-3 victory in their Veteran’s Day matinee game Monday at Comcast Arena. Everett improves to 3-0 against the Giants and 14-3-3-0 overall this season heading into Wednesday’s home game against the visiting Regina Pats.
In addition to Nikolishin’s overtime winner off an assist from Jujhar Khaira, Josh Winquist recorded a goal and an assist to extend his point streak to nine games. Manraj Hayer added two assists, while Darcy DeRoose scored his first WHL goal and Carson Stadnyk also lit the lamp as the ‘Tips won for the eighth time in their last ten tries.
The Silvertips went to work on the penalty kill following two infractions early in the first period, but didn’t allow a shot on goal while successfully killing off both. Everett then missed on one powerplay of its own, but outshot the Giants 9-7 in a scoreless period.
Vancouver got on the board first early in the middle frame, but the ‘Tips scored twice to take a 2-1 lead after two. An Everett turnover at the blueline resulted in a breakaway for Dalton Sward, who beat goaltender Daniel Cotton glove side. The Silvertips countered one minute later when Darcy DeRoose picked up a loose puck in the slot and guided it around Payton Lee and in the net to tie the game. Late in the period Mirco Mueller carried the puck into the Vancouver zone and found a streaking Manraj Hayer coming off the bench. Hayer sent a quick pass across the slot to set up Josh Winquist for a one-timer that gave the ‘Tips their first lead. Shots through two periods were 19-16 in favor of the ‘Tips.
Vancouver evened the score at two just 30 seconds into the third period as Brett Kulak’s point shot was deflected in by Trent Lofthouse. Everett re-took the lead five minutes later with a goal from Carson Stadnyk, whose backhand centering pass caromed off defenseman Mason Geertsen and into the net. The ‘Tips held the 3-2 lead for most of the period until Carter Popoff tied the game with 4:12 remaining, cutting to the net and sneaking a shot inside the near post to force overtime.
Everett made quick work of overtime, scoring at 1:07 on their first shot in the extra session. As the Vancouver goaltender played the puck behind the net, Jujhar Khaira intercepted his clearing attempt and quickly fed the puck in front. Nikolishin collected the pass and calmly fired it into an open net to give the ‘Tips a 4-3 victory.
The Silvertips led 26-24 on the shot clock through just over 61 minutes of play. Goaltender Daniel Cotton (5-1-2-0) stopped 21 of 24 shots in net for the ‘Tips, while Payton Lee (7-9-2-0) turned away 22 of 26 for the Giants. Neither team scored on the powerplay with Everett going 0 for 2 and Vancouver 0 for 3.
