RED DEER, AB – The Everett Silvertips rallied from a two-goal third-period deficit and then scored three consecutive goals in the shootout to defeat the Red Deer Rebels 3-2 Friday night at Enmax Centrium. The ‘Tips have now won two of their last three games as they head to Calgary to battle the Hitmen Saturday night.
Kent Simpson was phenomenal in goal for Everett, stopping 52 shots in regulation and overtime to come within one of the franchise record as Everett was outshot 54-29 in the game. Kohl Bauml and Josh Winquist netted third-period goals to help the ‘Tips erase a 2-0 deficit and force overtime. Ryan Harrison, Jari Erricson and finally Cody Fowlie then scored in the shootout to cap the rally and help Everett get the two points.
The Silvertips were forced to weather an early storm as Red Deer came out firing with 18 shots in the first period. Kent Simpson stopped every one however, and the ‘Tips got better throughout the period as the game remained scoreless through 20 minutes.
Red Deer grabbed the game’s first goal early in the second frame when John Persson received a pass from the corner and deked Kent Simpson before depositing a backhand shot for a 1-0 lead. The Rebels’ extended the lead to 2-0 midway through the period when a loose puck beside the net was knocked away from Simpson and banged into the net by Josh Cowen. That goal sent Everett to the locker room trailing by a pair.
The Silvertips battled back in the third period, getting on the board just after a powerplay had expired when Kohl Bauml finished off a nice pass from Jari Erricson to draw Everett within one. After a number of scoring chances on the powerplay a few minutes later, Josh Winquist wristed a shot into the top corner to knot the score at two.
Both teams had chances in overtime, but neither scored as the game went to a shootout. Red Deer twice took the lead in the shootout only to have Ryan Harrison and Jari Erricson tie it in the third and fourth rounds. Then after a Simpson save on Turner Elson in round five, Cody Fowlie scored the shootout-winner to give the Silvertips a 3-2 victory.
With 52 stops in the win, Simpson (4-7-0-1) came within one save of tying Leland Irving’s franchise record of 53 from a game in Spokane in February of 2008. Bolton Pouliot (0-2-0-0) stopped 29 shots in the shootout loss. The ‘Tips finished 1 for 5 on the powerplay while holding the Rebels off the board on four chances of their own.
