THUNDERBIRDS SHUT DOWN GIANTS – Calvin Pickard turned in a 37-save performance to post his second shutout of the season as the Seattle Thunderbirds blanked the visiting Vancouver Giants 3-0 in Western Hockey League action on Tuesday night.
Branden Troock, Luke Lockhart and Justin Hickman scored for the Thunderbirds (13-15-0-1), who win their second straight contest and remain in fourth place in the U.S. Division.
Adam Morrison turned aside 28 of 30 shots he faced through 57 minutes of action to take the loss for the Giants (20-12-1-1), who drop their second straight decision. Jackson Whistle stopped all three shots in 1:35 of relief work.
REBELS 4, ICE 2
Colten Mayor scored a pair of goals to lead the visiting Red Deer Rebels to a 4-2 victory over the Kootenay Ice on Tuesday.
Tyson Ness – with a goal and an assist – and Turner Elson also scored while Chad Robinson chipped in three assists for the Rebels (15-15-0-3), who finally halt their losing skid at 13 games. Deven Dubyk made 31 saves to post the win in his Rebels’ debut.
Joey Leach and Elgin Pearce scored for the Ice (20-10-1-2), who suffer their fifth loss over their last six games. Nathan Lieuwen made 26 saves in a losing cause.
RAIDERS 5, BLAZERS 2
Kellan Tochkin scored twice to pace the Prince Albert Raiders to a 5-2 victory over the visiting Kamloops Blazers on Tuesday.
Mike Winther notched a goal and two assists while Brandon Herrod and Shane Danyluk also scored for the Raiders (11-22-1-2), who improve to 5-1-0-1 over their last seven games. Cole Holowenko made 29 saves on 31 shots to claim the victory.
Tim Bozon and Brendan Ranford scored for the Blazers (22-9-1-0), who suffer back-to-back losses for just the third time this season. Cole Cheveldave made 34 saves in the setback.
WHEAT KINGS 5, ROCKETS 3
Darian Dziurzynski scored twice and set up another to lead the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 5-2 win over the visiting Kelowna Rockets on Tuesday.
Alessio Bertaggia – with a goal and an assist – Jason Swyripa and Dominick Favreau also scored for the Wheat Kings (20-13-1-1), who become the third East Division team to hit the 20-win mark. Brandon Anderson turned aside 37 of 40 shots fired his way to post his seventh victory of the season.
Colton Sissons scored twice and Carter Rigby also counted for the Rockets (13-18-1-2), who drop their third straight decision and remain in fourth place in the B.C. Division. Adam Brown made 35 saves in the defeat.
