RECAP » Patting Out 4 in 5
EVERETT, Wash. – Carter Hart’s career-high 48 saves and two critical penalty kills helped keep the Everett Silvertips in the hunt, ultimately falling 2-1 to the visiting Regina Pats before 4,227 fans at XFINITY Arena on Sunday in WHL action.
Patrick Bajkov broke a Silvertips power play drought with a third period goal. Robbie Holmes and Jake Leschyshyn each scored for Regina, who won for the first time on their U.S. Division trip. The Silvertips fell to 6-7-2-0 in 15 lifetime meetings with the Pats. Hart’s counterpart, Tyler Brown, stopped 38 shots.
Initially, the crowd was electrified when the Tips Montana Onyebuchi dropped the gloves with Regina’s Bryce Platt at 3:49, but the Silvertips, already skating a man short, lost Sean Richards for the remainder of the game at 14:33 when he was called for checking to the head and issued a game misconduct.
The Tips penalty kill neutralized the entire five minute major, and Hart delivered a tough save on Tanner Sidaway from between the circles with 11 seconds left in the period. Robbie Holmes scored the first goal of the game for the Pats at 11:47 of the second, as blown coverage on a rebound led to a wide open chance at the left post after Hart stopped Josh Mahura’s slap shot.
Both teams had 5-on-3 chances during the second period but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities and the Tips misfied on an open backdoor set up to Riley Sutter at the left post. The Pats got the shot advantage for the second period, 15-13.
Jake Leschyshyn boosted the lead 2-0 for the Pats at 2:19 in the third period after the Pats caused a chaos in front of the Tips’ net. Leschyshyn got a piece of Cale Fleury’s right point shot, and deflected it over the left shoulder of Hart.
Life was sparked back into the Silvertips at 12:10 when Patrick Bajkov cut the deficit in half with a huge power play goal, thanks to a beautiful and pin-point pass from Kevin Davis, making it 2-1 on Bajkov’s one-timer from the left circle.
The Tips were hit with a delay of game penalty during the last two minutes of the game but were able to get the puck into the Pats’ zone and pull Carter Hart. With 1.8 seconds to go, Matt Fonteyne rang a snap shot off the Pats’ goal post and came very close to tying the game. Unfortunately, video replay confirmed the shot off the post, and the Tips fell to the Pats, 2-1.
The Silvertips will return with a road game at Tri-City on Wednesday at 7:05 PM PT (Fox Sports 1380 / WHL Live). The Tips return home Friday, hosting Spokane at 7:35 p.m. (1520 AM / WHL Live) for the next Hockey Happy Hour event. Doors will open at 6pm and tickets are available at www.everettsilvertips.com/hhh.
