MOMENT OF THE YEAR » #9 … 8 goals … 1 big day
By Carmen Dittoe – Silvertips staff writer
In their fifth matchup of the season, the Silvertips toppled over the Winterhawks yet again as they closed their third win against the Portland team. A staggering 13 Tips players hit the scoresheet as Everett hit a season high of eight goals to beat the Winterhawks 8-3 in front of nearly 4,000 fans at Angel of the Winds Arena and captured first place in the Western Conference.
With rookie Dustin Wolf between the posts, Portland left-winger Skyler McKenzie quickly netted the first goal of the game 1:29 into the first period. However, the Silvertips answered shortly after as Bryce Kindopp (RW) put Everett on the board with a goal assisted by Montana Onyebuchi nearly halfway through the period. The momentum was carried as Luke Ormsby (RW) logged his first goal of the season with three minutes left in the first period. McKenzie answered shortly after, tying the game off an assist from Cody Glass.
In a fiery second period, the Silvertips put up five unanswered goals. Led by Kindopp’s second goal of the game 5:20 into the period, forwards Martin Fasko-Rudas and Akash Bains both found the net and logged two more goals. The Winterhawks answered by pulling rookie goalie Shane Farkas for Cole Kehler off the bench. However, Patrick Bajkov (RW) netted his 20th goal of the season less than four minutes after the goalie change, followed by Riley Sutter (RW) 16:52 into the second.
While Portland kicked off the third period with a goal by Jake Gricius, Everett forward Brandson Hein answered with his second goal of the season only 20 seconds later at 5:10.
Everett’s eight goals placed them at the top of the Western Conference for the first time all season, after they began in last place on October 27.
