EVERETT, Wash. – Matt Fonteyne had a goal and two assists, while Connor Dewar scored twice as the Everett Silvertips unloaded five goals in the final 12:33 on the Seattle Thunderbirds for a 7-4 victory on Saturday in the night game of the Delta Hotels Pre-Season Classic at XFINITY Arena.
Earning their first preseason win under head coach Dennis Williams, the Silvertips erased a 4-2 deficit in the third period with 18 shots on goal in the final 20 minutes. A total of 13 different players earned a point in an Everett sweater, and 2001-born goaltender Danton Belluk, who stopped 13 of 14 shots in the final 29 minutes, earned the victory in net.
The Tips close the preseason tourney on Sunday, hosting the Portland Winterhawks at 7:00 p.m. at XFINITY Arena. Tickets are on sale through www.everettsilvertips.com/preseason
Fonteyne found Patrick Bajkov on a cross-ice pass at the right circle, for his third goal of the preseason and a 1-0 when Bajkov parked a wrister into a half-open net at 10:58 of the opening frame.
Goaltender Blake Lyda, first prospect signed by the Tips out of his 2002-born draft class, was strong in the first period and stopped all 11 shots he faced. Both teams then combined for a three-goal flurry in a span of 39 seconds in the second period. Zack Andrusiak deflected a point shot at the front of the net and then Sami Moilanen buried a wrister between the circles, 14 seconds apart to put the Thunderbirds ahead, 2-1 with 14:03 left.
On the next shift, Kevin Davis cruised to the bottom of the right circle and slammed in a no-doubt one-timer from Fonteyne’s feed from behind the net, and the Tips responded for a 2-2 tie with 13:38 remaining.
Seattle then capitalized on a two-man advantage following a scrum at the benches, and Donovan Neuls parked a re-direction at the left post for a 3-2 lead at 9:14.
With 14:20 left in the third period, Elijah Brown stashed a loose puck under the crossbar for a 4-2 Thunderbird lead on a post-to-post pass by Nolan Volcan. But Dawson Butt drew the Tips to within a goal with 12:33 remaining to start the comeback, off a tap in behind Matt Berlin, after Conrad Mitchell and Pavel Azhgirei manufactured a scrum at the net.
Matt Fonteyne then tied the game at 14:42 when he crashed the net for a rebound, and Connor Dewar followed with a wrister that fooled Matt Berlin just 35 seconds later to push the Tips ahead, 5-4. Then with 2:38 remaining, newcomer defenseman Riley Bruce delivered a dagger, going upstairs on a snap shot from between the circles for a 6-4 cushion.
Dewar finished the Thunderbirds on an empty netter with 1:05 to play in the game, completing a comeback of five goals in a span of 11:28.
Seattle starter Matt Berlin took the loss with six goals allowed on 33 shots.
