EVERETT, Wash. – Patrick Bajkov collected the first natural hat trick of his career and tied a career high with four points to lead the Everett Silvertips to a 4-3 victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers before 4,387 fans at XFINITY Arena on Friday.
The Silvertips are now 12-1-3 in their last 16 games and are on a five game winning streak, seizing top record in the WHL and moving one point past the Tigers. Thanks Bajkov’s three goals (47th hat trick in Tips history) and Kevin Davis with the game winner, the Tips have won their only meeting against Medicine Hat this season. Matt Fonteyne had two assists.
Early into the game, there was a lot of pressure by Medicine Hat and Carter Hart saw quite a few shots. Everett and Medicine Hat took almost simultaneous penalties and there was 1:46 of 4-on-4 hockey. While on 4-on-4, 6:47 into the game, Steven Owre roofed a shot, giving Medicine Hat a 1-0 lead and ending Hart’s shutout streak at 193:48. The first period saw a lot of end-to-end action. Everett had a power play but did not get any solid chances.
The second period saw a more controlled game by the Tips, as they dominated the play for the majority of the period. The second period was the Patrick Bajkov show—Bajkov scored two goals 15 seconds apart at 6:17 and 6:32 with impressive help from Matt Fonteyne and Dominic Zwerger. Four minutes later, Bajkov fired a beauty of a shot past Schneider for his first career WHL hat trick at 10:44. At 10:51, a line brawl broke out between the two teams and Matt Fonteyne was sucker punched by Zach Fischer.
Fischer was ejected from the game. The penalties lead to the Tips and Tigers playing two minutes of 4-on-4 hockey and the Tips getting a three minute power play. The Tips went back to full strength and the Tigers immediately took another penalty, leading to a 5-on-3 power play. At 13:12, Bajkov fed a saucer pass to Kevin Davis and Davis zipped it past Schneider making it 4-1 Tips. Everett failed to capitalize on the remainder of the 5-on-4 hockey.
Medicine Hat came out swinging in the third period, controlling a majority of the play to begin the period. Brad Forrest scored his first goal of the season by going top shelf past Carter Hart at 4:34. Less than four minutes later, John Dahlstrom fired a high glove side shot that went past Hart, making it 4-3.
Medicine Hat used a lot of speed throughout the third period and keeped Everett on edge. Medicine Hat drew a penalty at 10:29 and put a lot of pressure on the Tips, but thanks to big saves by Carter Hart, Everett stayed in the game and made a huge kill. Things seemed to settle down for the Tips and they controlled a majority of the play for the rest of the game, leading to their 4-3 victory, fifth win in a row and their first place position in the league.
Carter Hart’s counterpart, Nick Schneider, made 20 saves.
The Silvertips conclude their home stand with a game against Tri-City on Wednesday, December 7 at 7:05PM PT (Fox Sports 1380 / WHL Live) at XFINITY Arena in Everett.
